٠This image illustrates two fundamental concepts in architectural and design composition: the Clustered Form and the Grid Form, using simple diagrams and referencing famous architectural examples.
🏗️ ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION FORMS
1. CLUSTERED FORM
• Diagram Description: Shows multiple individual elements (represented by rectangles) that are grouped or overlapped closely together. The arrangement is irregular, organic, and lacks a rigid, overarching organizing principle.
• Design Principle: Elements are grouped based on proximity, shared characteristics, or functional requirements, resulting in an asymmetrical and often dynamic shape.
• Architectural Example: Habitat 67
• Description: The floor plan of Habitat 67, an apartment complex in Montreal, is shown. It consists of numerous prefabricated concrete modules (the "elements") stacked and interlocked in an asymmetrical, yet structurally sound, way. This irregular, dense grouping perfectly exemplifies the Clustered Form principle in practice.
2. GRID FORM
• Diagram Description: Shows elements (rectangles) that are arranged in intersecting horizontal & vertical lines, creating a highly ordered, rectilinear pattern.
• Design Principle: Elements are placed at the intersections or within the squares of a modular grid. This form implies order, repetition, and geometric regularity.
• Architectural Example: Jawahar Kala Kendra
• Description: The floor plan of the Jawahar Kala Kendra cultural center in Jaipur, India, is shown. This design is based on the Vastu Purusha Mandala (a 3x3 grid) and its nine constituent squares, reflecting the original city plan of Jaipur. The plan demonstrates a clear arrangement of spaces and courtyards within a rigid, underlying Grid Form structure.
💡 SUMMARY
The image effectively uses these comparisons to teach how the arrangement of spaces or masses—the composition—can be driven by two contrasting organizational patterns: one based on proximity and irregularity (Clustered Form), and the other based on order and geometry (Grid Form).
