We might be referring to different things here, because when I hear "tumblr" and "gif" in the same sentence, my mind immediately goes to shitty, low-framerate, poorly cut gifs of shows and movies that don't fucking need the animation in the first place
All because tumblr has a really low file size limit and because there's nothing that would automatically make a pretty gif. It's a limitation of how gifs work. You have to carefully choose the palette, adjust the colors, etc., to make it look decent.
Look at /r/highqualitygifs and compare it to whatever tumblr gifs are. It's a day-and-night difference
Also good idea to screencap it in case the user pussies out and deletes the post

you can just post it, I'm going to probably maybe make a userscript that's just going to put all the relevant info in your clipboard

I don't get that? Like, you're literally telling people that you didn't make it and that they should probably check out the rest of the discussion on some other place.

yeah, that's kind of the point.. Why wouldn't they just embed whatever's being hosted by some trusted host like imgur
I get why they rehost things, but tumblr does it very horribly

Get on reddit. It has the same "save post" feature that you can use to keep track of whatever you liked enough to save
Or you can just view whatever you've upvoted, though that's a bit more cluttered at least for me
