Thing is, this is my opinion because it's extremely easy to make a new group and mod it the way _you_ want. It's what is called free speech.

Of course, this is a bit different when the group is directly tied to some other group, like a subreddit, in which case you might want to have the community decide what's better.

Otherwise, it's somewhat self-regulating, as people are not going to stay in places where mods do whatever they want.

Also, this is basically how @toomeirl4meirl handles this, as the mods are basically just the most active people.

Tbh, we don't get too much abuse, it's mostly to pin stupid shit.
