another funny moment from intel
- they're making most instructions take different amounts of time
- this breaks crypto, as it is important that encryption takes the same amount of time no matter what key or data
- intel says it should only be turned on "where necessary"
- this is complete nonsense, because encryption can take place anywhere, and no software explicitly says "I am encrypting things"
- apparently, on newer CPUs, this slowdown will be even worse
The tl;dr is that intel is trying to squeeze performance out of their CPUs by sacrificing security. Sound familiar to anyone?
