Gut #microbiota composition during infancy and subsequent #behavioural outcomes

..The faecal microbiota were analysed at 1, 6, and 12 months of age. Behavioural outcomes were measured at 2 years of age.

Findings

In an unselected birth cohort, we found a clear association between decreased normalised abundance of Prevotella in faecal samples collected at 12 months of age and increased behavioural problems at 2 years, in particular Internalizing Problem scores. This association appeared independent of multiple potentially confounding variables, including maternal mental health. Recent exposure to antibiotics was the best predictor of decreased Prevotella.

Interpretation

Our findings demonstrate a strong association between the composition of the gut microbiota in infancy and subsequent behavioural outcomes; and support the importance of responsible use of antibiotics during early life.

The intestinal #microbiota and #cardiovascular disease
https://2medical.news/2020/03/06/the-intestinal-microbiota-and-cardiovascular-disease/

The intestinal microbiota of human hosts is the community of microorganisms living in the small and, mainly, the large intestine of humans. This microbial ecosystem has co-evolved with humans across the millennia, has come to play an important interactive role in human physiology and has been aptly called our forgotten organ. Significant properties of the microbiota benefiting its host include energy harvest from food sources …
Intratumoral accumulation of gut #microbiota facilitates CD47-based immunotherapy via STING signaling
https://2medical.news/2020/03/29/intratumoral-accumulation-of-gut-microbiota-facilitates-cd47-based-immunotherapy-via-sting-signaling/

..Using one defined anaerobic gut microbiota to track whether microbiota interact with host immunity, we observed that Bifidobacterium facilitates local anti-CD47 immunotherapy on tumor tissues through the capacity to accumulate within the tumor microenvironment. Systemic administration of Bifidobacterium leads to its accumulation within the tumor and converts the nonresponder mice into responders to anti-CD47 immunotherapy in a stimulator of interferon genes (STING)– and interferon-dependent fashion. …
Association Between the Gut #Microbiota and Blood #Pressure in a Population Cohort of 6953 Individuals
https://2medical.news/2020/08/17/association-between-the-gut-microbiota-and-blood-pressure-in-a-population-cohort-of-6953-individuals/

Several small‐scale animal studies have suggested that gut microbiota and blood pressure (BP) are linked. However, results from human studies remain scarce and conflicting. We wanted to elucidate the multivariable‐adjusted association between gut metagenome and BP in a large, representative, well‐phenotyped population sample. We performed a focused analysis to examine the previously reported inverse associations between sodium intake and Lactobacillus abundance and between Lactobacillus abundance …
Warmth Prevents #Bone Loss Through the Gut #Microbiota
https://2medical.news/2020/09/16/warmth-prevents-bone-loss-through-the-gut-microbiota/

Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic bone disease, characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration. Here, we show that warmth exposure (34°C) protects against ovariectomy-induced bone loss by increasing trabecular bone volume, connectivity density, and thickness, leading to improved biomechanical bone strength in adult female, as well as in young male mice. Transplantation of the warm-adapted microbiota phenocopies the warmth-induced bone effects. Both warmth …
Fecal #Microbiota Transplant is Highly Effective in Real-World Practice: Initial Results from the FMT National Registry
https://2medical.news/2020/10/05/fecal-microbiota-transplant-is-highly-effective-in-real-world-practice-initial-results-from-the-fmt-national-registry/

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is commonly used for treatment of C. difficile infections (CDI), although prospective safety data are limited and real-world FMT practice and outcomes are not well described. The FMT National Registry was designed to assess FMT methods and both safety and effectiveness outcomes from North American FMT providers.. ..Of the first 259 participants enrolled at 20 sites, 222 have completed short-term follow-up …
Dietary #Fructose Alters the Composition, Localization and Metabolism of Gut #Microbiota in Association with Worsening #Colitis
https://2medical.news/2020/10/10/dietary-fructose-alters-the-composition-localization-and-metabolism-of-gut-microbiota-in-association-with-worsening-colitis/

The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases has increased over the last half century, suggesting a role for dietary factors. Fructose consumption has increased in recent years. Recently, a high fructose diet (HFrD) was shown to enhance DSS-induced colitis in mice. The primary objectives of the current study were to elucidate the mechanism(s) underlying the pro-colitic effects of dietary fructose and to determine whether this effect …
The gut #microbiota is associated with #immune cell dynamics in humans
https://2medical.news/2020/11/29/the-gut-microbiota-is-associated-with-immune-cell-dynamics-in-humans/

The gut microbiota influences development and homeostasis of the mammalian immune system, and is associated with human inflammatory and immune diseases as well as responses to immunotherapy. Nevertheless, our understanding of how gut bacteria modulate the immune system remains limited, particularly in humans, where the difficulty of direct experimentation makes inference challenging. Here we study hundreds of hospitalized—and closely monitored—patients with cancer receiving haematopoietic cell …
Gut #microbiota depletion by chronic antibiotic treatment alters the #sleep/wake architecture and sleep #EEG power spectra in mice
https://2medical.news/2020/12/01/gut-microbiota-depletion-by-chronic-antibiotic-treatment-alters-the-sleep-wake-architecture-and-sleep-eeg-power-spectra-in-mice/

Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota affects physiological processes, including brain functions, by altering the intestinal metabolism. Here we examined the effects of the gut microbiota on sleep/wake regulation. C57BL/6 male mice were treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics for 4 weeks to deplete their gut microbiota. Metabolome profiling of cecal contents in antibiotic-induced microbiota-depleted (AIMD) and control mice showed significant variations in the metabolism of amino acids …
Effects of #probiotics on gut #microbiota: mechanisms of intestinal immunomodulation and neuromodulation
https://2medical.news/2020/12/13/effects-of-probiotics-on-gut-microbiota-mechanisms-of-intestinal-immunomodulation-and-neuromodulation/

Recent explorations of the human gut microbiota suggest that perturbations of microbial communities may increase predisposition to different disease phenotypes. Dietary nutrients may be converted into metabolites by intestinal microbes that serve as biologically active molecules affecting regulatory functions in the host. Probiotics may restore the composition of the gut microbiome and introduce beneficial functions to gut microbial communities, resulting in amelioration or prevention of …

Fecal #microbiota transplant overcomes resistance to anti–PD-1 therapy in #melanoma patients
https://2medical.news/2021/02/07/fecal-microbiota-transplant-overcomes-resistance-to-anti-pd-1-therapy-in-melanoma-patients/

Anti–programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) therapy provides long-term clinical benefits to patients with advanced melanoma. The composition of the gut microbiota correlates with anti–PD-1 efficacy in preclinical models and cancer patients. To investigate whether resistance to anti–PD-1 can be overcome by changing the gut microbiota, this clinical trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of responder-derived fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) together with anti–PD-1 in patients …
