Diurnal and circadian variation of #sleep and alertness in men vs. naturally cycling #women

http://m.pnas.org/content/early/2016/09/09/1524484113

Our results indicate that women are likely initiating sleep at a later circadian phase than men, which may be one factor contributing to the increased susceptibility to sleep disturbances reported in women. Lower nighttime alertness is also observed, suggesting a physiological basis for a greater susceptibility to maladaptation to night shift work in women.
Correlates and Impact of Coronary Artery #Calcifications in #Women Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention With Drug-Eluting Stents: From the Women in Innovation and Drug-Eluting Stents (WIN-DES) Collaboration

http://interventions.onlinejacc.org/mobile/article.aspx?articleID=2553392

Conclusions Women undergoing PCI of calcified lesions tend to have worse clinical profile and remain at increased ischemic risk, irrespective of new-generation DES.
#Women Benefit More Than Men in Response to College-based #Meditation Training http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fpsyg.2017.00551/full

Compared to men, women showed greater decreases in negative affect and greater increases on scales measuring mindfulness and self-compassion. Women’s improvements in negative affect were correlated to improvements in measures of both mindfulness skills and self-compassion. In contrast, men showed non-significant increases in negative affect, and changes in affect were only correlated with ability to describe emotions, not any measures of experiential or self-acceptance.

Conclusion: These findings suggest that women may have more favorable responses than men to school-based mindfulness training, and that the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions may be maximized by gender-specific modifications.
Hepatitis #C Virus Infection Among Reproductive-Aged #Women and #Children in the United States, 2006 to 2014
http://annals.org/aim/article/2625387/hepatitis-c-virus-infection-among-reproductive-aged-women-children-united

The number of reproductive-aged women with acute and past or present HCV infection in the NNDSS doubled, from 15 550 in 2006 to 31 039 in 2014. Of 581 255 pregnant women tested by Quest from 2011 to 2014, 4232 (0.73% 95% CI, 0.71% to 0.75%) had HCV infection. Of children tested by Quest, 0.76% (CI, 0.69% to 0.83%) had HCV infection, but the percentage was 3.2-fold higher among children aged 2 to 3 years (1.62% CI, 1.34% to 1.96%) than those aged 12 to 13 years (0.50% CI, 0.41% to 0.62%). Conclusion:
These data suggest a recent increase in HCV infection among reproductive-aged women and may inform deliberations regarding a role for routine HCV screening during pregnancy.

Prevalence of #Depression Among #Women of Reproductive Age in the United States

https://journals.lww.com/greenjournal/Citation/2018/04000/Prevalence_of_Depression_Among_Women_of.10.aspx

The overall prevalences of major and minor depression were 4.8% (95% CI 4.0–5.7%) and 4.3% (95% CI 3.5–5.2%), respectively. The prevalences of antidepressant use among women with major depression and minor depression were 32.4% (95% CI 25.3–40.4%) and 20.0% (95% CI 12.9–29.7%), respectively. Factors most strongly associated with major depression were government insurance (adjusted relative risk RR ratio 2.49, 95% CI 1.56–3.96) and hypertension (adjusted RR 2.09, 95% CI 1.25–3.50); for minor depression, these were education less than high school (adjusted RR 4.34, 95% CI 2.09–9.01) or high school education (adjusted RR 2.92, 95% CI 1.35–6.31).

CONCLUSION: Our analysis indicates that 1 in 20 nonpregnant women of childbearing age experience major depression. Antidepressants are used by one third of those with major depression and one fifth of those with minor depression

Draft Recommendation Statement
Hepatitis #B Virus Infection in Pregnant #Women: Screening

https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/Page/Document/draft-recommendation-statement/hepatitis-b-virus-infection-in-pregnant-women-screening

Importance
Screening for HBV infection during pregnancy identifies women whose infants are at risk of perinatal transmission. Data from a nationally representative sample showed a prevalence of maternal HBV infection of 85.8 cases per 100,000 deliveries from 1998 to 2011 (0.09% of live-born singleton deliveries in the United States).1, 2 Although there are guidelines for universal infant HBV vaccination, rates of maternal HBV have increased annually by 5.5% since 1998.1, 2 Persons infected with HBV during infancy or childhood are more likely to progress to chronic infection. Chronic HBV infection increases long-term morbidity and mortality by predisposing infected persons to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.

USPSTF Assessment
Using a reaffirmation process, the USPSTF concludes with high certainty that the net benefit of screening for HBV infection in pregnant women is substantial.

Statement on warning for #women of childbearing age about possible safety risks of dietary supplements containing #vinpocetine

https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/statement-warning-women-childbearing-age-about-possible-safety-risks-dietary-supplements-containing

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about safety concerns regarding an ingredient called vinpocetine that is found in dietary supplements, specifically concerns about the use of this ingredient by women of childbearing age..

Dietary supplements containing vinpocetine are often marketed for uses that include enhanced memory, focus, or mental acuity; increased energy; and weight loss. Scientists who have studied the effects of vinpocetine on pregnant animals concluded that vinpocetine decreased fetal weight and increased the chances of a miscarriage..
