Instead of telling you a boring version of the MD Pharmacology course details I will tell you my own story in brief of MD Pharmacology, what I know/ learned about it in past few years, and the opinion of people working in the industry. How & Why I took MD Pharmacology I have done my MD Pharmacology from Dept. of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai. I finished my MD in 2017 after which I did my 1-year bonded service from the same department. Right now, I am working as an Assistant Professor at the same place. Since I passed out my MBBS from TN Medical College, Mumbai, I wanted to look for a specialty course that is not clinical. I used to have a look at the LinkedIn profiles of people working in Pharmaceutical companies and almost all of them used to have MD Pharmacology degrees. I had even given interviews at a couple of places including at Pfizer for the role of Medical Science Liaison (MSL) for which I was not selected. I had a few ideas of my own to start websites. One of these was starting www.desimedicos.com which I started in 2013. By this time, I was pretty sure to do MD Pharmacology as the opportunities for me would be more in this field than any other. I took the admission to MD Pharmacology at GSMC in 2014. During the counseling, I was getting seats like General surgery and Pathology which put me in dilemma and made me think even after I took the MD Pharmacology seat if it was the right decision to take up MD Pharmacology. If I look back on time it was the right decision. MD Pharmacology at GSMC is counted as one of the best in the country. Among the top 3 places in India according to many. The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at GSMC is big with a lot of faculty members and 7 seats when I had joined in 2014. Now it has 10 seats from 2015 onwards. Residency We had multiple postings during the first year of residency including the Neuropharmacology lab, experimental lab, animal house, and Ayurveda Research Centre and Clinical Pharmacology. In the neuropharmacology lab, we used to do animal experiments on various instruments that are available in the lab. For example, we could test analgesic drugs by giving it to animals and then testing on the instrument like a hot plate analgesiometer. Personally, I hated animal experiments due to which I had chosen a clinical research study as my dissertation topic under the guidance of Dr. Yashashri Shetty. In the experimental lab, we had to dissect the animal and mount the tissues (rat colon, rat stomach fundus, rat uterus, guinea pig ileum) in the bioassay instruments to check the effects of drugs on the tissues by checking contraction of the tissues with drugs and drawing graphs. We also had to give seminars and journal clubs. Journal club (JC) is a presentation in which we were given a research paper and we had to criticize the paper scientifically. During the 2nd year, we were posted in Dept. of Clinical Pharmacology (which had DM Clinical Pharmacology courses) and industry posting. In Clinical Pharmacology, we had to help in carrying out the clinical trials and Pharmacovigilance. We were asked to go to the wards and get 2 adverse drug reaction (ADR) cases each day. I was posted in the Ferring Pharmaceuticals for 1 month as an intern in which mostly I did work on preparing PowerPoint presentations. During the final year, it was mostly completing the data analysis and writing the dissertation and submission to the university (MUHS). During the residency were also given teaching duty in which we had to take lectures of nursing and OT/PT students. There are some colleges which have a Pharmacology department which is not very active. I have heard of departments that don’t have any seminar, JC, PG activity, posting, etc. The only thing which the student does is reading Goodman Gilman and finishing up their dissertation work in the first year itself. Some residents even work part-time in Pharmacovigilance. There are some students…
