Remember when the NYT posted a Swastika Crossword (Swasword?) on the first day of Hanukkah in 2022?
Turns out they've done it before. Twice.
Fig 2 is the Swasword dated 28th October 2017.
Fig 3 is the Swasword from their app dated 7th December 2014
The clue for 89 across mentions Toledo, who's gates were opened by Jews to allow the Muslim army to invade in 711. 😈
Whereas 60 across mentions Brandenburg Gate, which Hitler and the Nazis marched through on his 50th birthday in 1939.
1 across is 'I'm in heaven'.
And 1 down on the 2014 Swasword is solved with the word Jew.
Why would they do this?
Jordan Cohen of the NYT said, "This is a common crossword design."
The Swasword designer, Ryan McCarty said he wanted to do "a fun whirlpool shape".
