The pie charts provide information on the electricity production through seven distinct sources in Scotland for 20 years ago and last year.

Overall, despite a significant drop in its share, coal remained by far the biggest electricity producer over the span, with gas and nuclear coming a distant second. The amount of energy generated by hydro pumped storage, gas and hydro natural flow, similarly, decreased negligibly, albeit to varying degrees. The other three categories, by contrast, showed a considerable growth in their figures.

Looking at three major energy sources initially, coal stood out in that it recorded the largest proportion, roughly 41% before displaying a moderate fall to about a third. Gas, in the meantime, was reported to experience a marginal decrease, with the figure making up around 22% in both years. The amount of electricity generated by nuclear energy, however, grew substantially by 6 percentage points, from just under a fifth.

The other four sources accounted for the least percentages of electricity. Hydro pumped storage and hydro natural flow demonstrated more or less identical patterns of change, with both constituting a 1% drop to 2% and 8%, respectively. While the share of oil doubled to 4%, that of other renewables went up to 5% after a slight increase of 2%.

The bar chart provides data on the quantity of research students of both genders in six majors at a UK university in 2009.

Overall, male students were more involved in research across all the disciplines in question, except for Veterinary medicine where females showed dominance. It is also apparent that by far the most popular research sphere among both sexes was Biology.

Looking at the disciplines with the greatest discrepancy in student counts initially, Physics displayed a significantly higher number of men, roughly 220 which was five times as many as that of women. (45) Although Astronomy and Geology were reported to be equally preferred by male researchers, with the figures amounting to 150 each, these varied among females. While around 70 of them conducted scientific research in Geology, just over 50 did so in Astronomy.

The other three categories, however, showed more or less similar interests in research. Having topped the list with the highest number of students, Biology recorded about 240 men which was the chart peak, and 200 women, making it the most common domain of research. Similarly, Medicine had the same gender gap, with the figure for males and females averaging at 200 and almost 150, respectively. Finally, Veterinary medicine was an exception in that it attracted more women, almost 110 compared to merely 70 men.

The pie charts display the changes in the online sales for four different retail sectors in New Zealand over a decade, starting from 2003.

Overall, there was a rise in the shares of film/music and books, while the reverse was true for the other two categories. Despite initial dominance in retail sector, travel was taken over by film/music in 2013.

The percentages of film/music and books increased, albeit to varying degrees. The former started the period with just over a fifth before topping the chart with roughly a third after 10 years. A similar trend was observed in the book sales, though an increase was much smaller, from merely 19% in 2003 to about 22% in 2013.

The other two retail sectors, however, recorded a significant decline in their rates. Travel was distinct in that it made up the chart peak of 36% in the initial year, after which this figure dropped sharply by around 7%, ranking second in overall sales. Finally, the proportion of clothing was relatively higher in 2003, at almost a quarter, just to experience a sharp fall of 8 percentage points.

Some people believe that libraries are crucial for society to find information and use a book. Others say computers have become popular so libraries are a waste of money.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.


Libraries are thought to be of high importance in searching for information and books although some people deem that the popularity of computers renders them useless. While I admit that libraries are essential in some regards, I still fall into the second camp.

Admittedly, libraries have always played an important role in education and society. Being the most traditional way of looking for data and resources, libraries offer a number of benefits, and thus it might be wrong to label them as futile. First, they provide a friendly quiet environment, which causes visitors to switch into a study mode and make more in-depth research. Given the absence of distractions, such as loud noise, people talking, mobile devices and random household chores, people are more likely to focus better and longer on their research topic or book, thereby avoiding superficial learning. This, in turn, brings about the feelings of satisfaction and contentment of a job well done. Moreover, libraries stand out in that they are the repository of reliable and authentic sources verified by a range of specialists and researchers. Despite a lack of up-to-date materials at times, libraries tend to comprise works diligently and rigorously inspected by editors and publishing houses. As a result, everyone can feel safe about what they are reading and including in their research paper or assignments.

I, however, consider that computers are more efficient owing to several conveniences. With the advent of technology and digital tools, the lives of people have become much easier seeing as many services are now cheaper, faster and easily accessible. Libraries are prime examples. Gone are the days when people spent money on commuting, membership cards or entrance fees because one is reluctant to expend on something which can be accessed online for free, wherever and whenever they want. Those expenses, in fact, can strain household budgets and it is reasonable enough for people to choose better alternatives. Not only that, the use of laptops and Internet extends the range of opportunities and choices, which means one can find books and papers unavailable in the physical libraries, make notes and highlight necessary details, edit and extract pages or make use of other features present in e-versions. This leads to heightened engagement with literature and more immersive experience, thereby making the overall process enjoyable. Another competitive edge over libraries is the chance to study/work within the comfort of one's home. Not only do libraries foster a silent learning environment, but they also can create an overwhelming and stressful setting. As sitting in silence and restraining movements might cause a lot of stress, anxiety and apprehension, it comes as no surprise that people opt for using computers in familiar and comfortable locations, which in turn helps them to stay in control of their actions and decisions.

In conclusion, granted, libraries have a role to play in society since they promote deep learning and guarantee the validity of available sources. I, nevertheless, support the view that computers offer a relatively hassle-free, stress-free and more efficient way to find information.

The pie charts show the changes in the global production shares across six distinct sectors in 2040 and 2060.

Overall, while the production rates for energy and agriculture are expected to decrease in two decades, the reverse will be true for the other remaining categories. Of particular note are services and manufacturing, which are shown to be by far the biggest producers in 2040, and retain these positions over the next twenty years.

Topping the list with a chart-high of 40% in the initial year, services are projected to see their percentage grow, though the rise will make up merely 1%. Although manufacturing is predicted to experience a relatively bigger increase, from 31% to roughly a third, it is displayed to remain as the second largest production sector in both years in question.

Materials and info-com tech, in the meantime, are shown to record marginal growth of one percentage point each. While the former, being the smallest producer in 2040, is expected to register a negligible climb from 3% to 4%, the latter does so with the final figure of 16%.

In contrast, energy and agriculture categories are similar in that they both will display a fall in output. Despite ranking fourth in the chart, the proportion of energy will drop moderately by 2%, accounting for a tiny fraction of 5% in 2060. The agriculture closes the list with a minimal production rate, with the figure falling from 4% in 2040 to only 1%.
