O prêmio foi criado pela Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática - SBM, em conjunto com a Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática Apliacada e Computacional - SBMAC e tem objetivo de promover e estimular a produção bibliográfica nacional em Matemática e Aplicações, destinada à formação e difusão de conhecimentos na área.
Serão aceitas obras publicadas entre os anos de 2010 e 2018 e podem concorrer autores brasileiros ou que atuem profissionalmente no Brasil e tenham publicado obras na forma de monografias, textos introdutórios e, preferencialmente, livros-texto.
As inscrições seguem até 20 de maio e podem ser feitas pelos próprios autores, ou por terceiros autorizados por eles, no site https://premiacoes.sbm.org.br/. O vencedor recebe diploma certificado pela SBM e SBMAC e R$ 10 mil.
Serão considerados como critérios de julgamento da obra: originalidade,
relevância, e profundidade; a clareza e qualidade da exposição; o histórico de revisões,
