Pensando nisso, Cristiane Rousseau e Yvan Saint-Aubin ministraram o curso Matemática e tecnologia na Universidade de Montreal e, depois, publicaram o livro homônimo. Suas aplicações são atuais e sua compreensão requer apenas conhecimentos elementares de cálculo diferencial e integral e da álgebra linear. A SBM o traduziu para o português em dois volumes.
Neste primeiro volume é explicada a matemática envolvida no GPS, nos registradores de deslocamento linear e na cartografia; nos padrões artísticos formados por frisos e mosaicos; no movimento dos rôbos; nos códigos corretores de erros; nas transações financeiras on-line com o uso de criptografia; nos mecanismos de buscas como o Google; em esqueletos e radiocirurgia com raios gama; e no estudo de juros compostos, empréstimos, planos de previdência e hipotecas.
