CHAPTER 6: LINEAR INEQUALITIES IN TWO VARIABLES

1. What is a linear inequality?

A linear inequality compares two expressions using:

< — less than
> — greater than
— less than or equal to
— greater than or equal to
Types of Boundary Lines 📐
1. Dashed line (— — —) Used for: 
‼️  The points on the line are not included.
2. Solid line (━━━━) Used for: 
‼️  The points on the line are included.
💡 Dashed lines mean the points on the line are not included.
Solid lines mean the points on the line are included.
3. How to draw the graph

Example:

y > x + 2

Step 1: Draw the boundary line:

y = x + 2

Use a dashed line because the sign is >.

Step 2: Choose a test point, usually (0,0).

Substitute:

0 > 0 + 2

0 > 2 False

Step 3: Since (0,0) is false, shade the region opposite the origin.
🌟 Important special cases

y > a

Shade above the horizontal line y=a.

y < a

Shade below the horizontal line y=a.

x > a

Shade to the right of the vertical line x=a.

x < a

Shade to the left of the vertical line x=a.
Changing the inequality sign

When multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number, reverse the inequality sign.

Example:

-2x > 6

Divide by -2:

x < -3

💡 The sign changes from > to <.
