From the brink of collapse, India’s third-largest telco has miraculously held on. And now Vi is admittedly close to raising Rs 20,000 crore, and one of the investors could likely be Amazon.
But why is Amazon interested in Vi? On a quarter-on-quarter basis, Vi’s revenue and EBITDA inched up 5.4% and 21.8% respectively, for the quarter ended March 2022. It also gained 1.1 mn 4G subscribers, bringing its 4G subscriber count to 118.1 million, or 48.4% of its total subscriber base.In 2020, Amazon was looking to invest in Airtel, but Airtel ended up with a promise from Google for a $1 billion investment. Google along with Meta have invested in Reliance-owned Jio. And Jio also has a partnership with Microsoft. That leaves Amazon, the only major cloud giant, without a telco partnership, and Vi, the only telco with no big investments from big tech. via The Ken
