*LEADERS’ VOICE*

*BHARAT PURI – MD, Pidilite Industries on growth across segms. & raw material margin pressure*
“Consumer & Bazaar will always grow a little faster as long as the economy grows. We have always said that in Pidilite, we have a very simple correlation to the economy. We divide our business into core growth & pioneer categories; core tends to grow 1.5-2x GDP & growth in pioneer categories at 2-5x GDP. Outlook for these categories is fairly robust.

Margins have been under pressure. We have seen unprecedented rise in raw material prices; our principal raw material VAM, was $900/ton, the current price this year in Q1 was $2,000/ton. But we are seeing some softening of the price, in August it is down to about $1,500/ton. But Q2 will also see margin pressure. Q3 & Q4 we will see softening again.”

*LAKSH VAAMAN SEHGAL – Group VC, Motherson Sumi on substantial revenue from non-auto biz*
“We aim to grow our revenues to $36 bn by FY25. We expect new businesses in non-auto segms to make up for 25 per cent of its revenue then. While auto remains the key focus area, we are also targeting substantial revenues from non-auto industries – aerospace, logistics, industrial solutions, health & medical.

Given our strong relations with OEMs, it is a logical step to offer that support. For aerospace, we have a very strong mfg heritage & we are familiar with low-vol. mfg to the highest quality standards. So, none of these entries were random, they were all logical adjacencies for us & we are confident we can make our mark in them.”

*GEORGE ALEXANDER MUTHOOT – MD, Muthoot Finance on gold loan demand & asset quality*
“During full Q1 there were quite a lot of lockdowns in many states. But in spite of that, we were able to probably do reasonably good collections & growth, but Q2 we have seen good growth and demand in the gold loans so far. I hope that it will be there in the Q3 & Q4 also.

Looking at Gross Stage 3 assets, we generally are comfortable with anything between 1% to 2%. Now it is just 1%, & previously it was less than 1%. So Rs 600 crore is actually nothing alarming, nothing to be concerned about. All these loans we have the full collateral with us so we look at it as ‘we are in the money’.”

*KAUSHIK ROY – MD, Phillips Carbon Black on scaling volumes in international mkts & greenfield capacity*
“In Q1, when domestic demand was impacted due to regional lockdowns, we could swiftly shift higher vols. to the international market. Export sales volume in the quarter was 34 per cent. Our global footprint spans over 45 countries & we have offices in Belgium, China, South Korea, Japan, Germany & Vietnam, among others.

We produce ~603k MT of carbon black annually, have commissioned a greenfield project of about 150k MT for mfg
of various grades of carbon black & green power plant, spread over 60 acres of land in Tamil Nadu. The project is in progress & is likely to be commissioned by Q3 FY23.”

*KALYAN KUMAR PAUL – President (TI Cycles), Tube Investments on foray into e3Ws*
“We will launch our e3Ws (L5M or passenger category) by March next year. Work has already started on it and a lot of equipment is getting installed. We are looking at our possible markets, distribution and service strategy. The strategy is to first look into the Southern mkts & quickly accelerate presence to other regions of the country.

The advantage for us as an EV player would be an established supply chain of 3,500 direct dealer points for bicycles & 190 exclusive retail outlets under the brand ‘Track & Trail’. We can take advantage of this, at least in the initial stages of its EV foray. After L5M, we will get into last-lap connectivity in the cargo (L5N) & later this may be followed by e-rickshaws & scooters.”
