*Summer has not been kind to regional markets:* the MXAPJ index is down 10% for 3Q-to-date, the second worst July/August performance in 20 years, after 2015’s 16% drop. China regulation tightening along with Delta variant-driven growth downgrades and concerns over Fed tapering have produced a toxic cocktail for investors.
*Looking forward, we see grounds for a rebound into year-end.* The broad macro backdrop remains supportive for equities, corporate profits are strong, valuations have compressed meaningfully, and positioning and seasonal patterns are favorable. Newsflow – and therefore price action – is likely to remain volatile in China but a lot of concern has been priced. Many other parts of the region – including Japan, the north Asian markets of Korea and Taiwan, India and even the chronically underperforming ASEAN bloc – have positive investment cases.
