Data Centre spending $31.6 trillion by 2050: PwC estimates - Constraints may be physical and power infrastructure
PwC estimates global data-centre spending could reach $31.6 trillion cumulatively through 2050, with annual spending rising from ~$800 billion currently to $1.1 trillion by 2030 and $1.8 trillion by 2050
GPUs, servers, storage and networking equipment need regular upgrades. PwC expects the AI infrastructure cycle to effectively reset every 4–6 years, creating recurring capex rather than a traditional infrastructure boom followed by a decline.
ICT equipment is expected to account for ~93% of data-centre investment by 2050, up from ~70% today. This makes semiconductors, servers, networking, power electronics and cooling particularly attractive.
Data centres need enormous amounts of reliable electricity. Availability of affordable, reliable and increasingly clean power could determine which countries/regions attract the next wave of AI infrastructure
PwC expects China and India to drive a large share of incremental data-centre demand, supported by huge populations, expanding digital economies and significant scope for AI adoption.
The capex chain includes power generation → transmission → transformers → UPS → switchgear → cooling → servers → networking → construction → data-centre real estate.
⚠️What can derail the boom?
The biggest constraint isn't capital — it's power and physical infrastructure.
PwC also highlights semiconductor supply disruptions, data sovereignty, connectivity and local opposition as potential bottlenecks. At least 75 projects worth ~$130 billion were reportedly delayed or blocked by community resistance in Q1 2026.
Beneficiary Companies -
Power & grid
=> NTPC
=> Power Grid
=> Tata Power
=> JSW Energy
=> Adani Energy Solutions
Cables & Wire
=> Polycab India
=> KEI Industries
=> RR Kabel
=> APAR Industries
=> Finolex Cables
Electrical equipment / power infrastructure
=> Hitachi Energy India
=> ABB India
=> Siemens
=> CG Power
Data-centre infrastructure/construction
=> Larsen & Toubro
=> Techno Electric & Engineering
=> Anant Raj
=> Netweb Technologies
=> E2E Networks
Cooling and Thermal Management
=> Blue Star
=> Voltas
=> Aeroflex Industries
The AI boom is gradually becoming an electricity + infrastructure boom. The biggest winners may not only be Nvidia-type chip companies; they could also be the companies supplying power, transformers, cooling, grids, construction and data-centre infrastructure.
