*CLSA: India Strategy — Taking stock - July 21*

*Add ONGC but remove Bharti from CLSA’s India focus portfolio*

The Nifty’s 7% rally during the Apr-Jun 2021 quarter was better than most global markets. This has taken up its relative valuation to Asia ex-Japan as well as EM benchmarks to just shy of +1 std. its average premium but it remains one of the best earnings growth stories in the world. This quarter did not see dominant investment style based performance. After starting the quarter at neutral, India’s Bull-Bear Index ended at an elevated level even after cooling off from the extreme bullish levels of mid-Jun. Our India focus portfolio has outperformed the Nifty by 5ppt/20ppt during the quarter/YTD. We add ONGC to this portfolio and remove Bharti Airtel. A further pick-up in vaccinations and the continued relaxation by states driving economic normalisation by end-2021 should keep investors optimistic, in our view.
