VIX, or the CBOE Volatility Index, is a measure of the expected volatility of the S&P 500 index over the next 30 days. It is sometimes referred to as the "fear index" because it tends to rise during times of market uncertainty and panic.

A VIX reading below 20 indicates a relatively calm market, while a reading above 30 suggests high volatility and potentially turbulent market conditions. A reading above 40 is considered very high and indicates extreme market turbulence and panic.
