🔆 Mercator Map vs Equal Earth Projection

📍 Why in News?
🟢 The United Nations General Assembly voted to phase out the traditional Mercator map in favour of the Equal Earth projection to provide a more accurate representation of global landmass proportions.

📍 About Mercator Map
🟢 A cylindrical map projection, mathematically derived.
🟢 Longitudes and latitudes intersect at 90° angles.
🟢 Longitudes are evenly spaced, while latitudes become increasingly farther apart away from the Equator.
🟢 The Equator lies at the centre of the map.
🟢 Designed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator, primarily to aid navigation.

📍 Major Limitation
🟢 Mercator projection distorts area, especially towards the poles.
🟢 Regions near the Equator appear relatively smaller, while high-latitude regions appear disproportionately larger.
🟢 Example: Greenland can appear comparable in size to Africa, although Africa is about 14 times larger.

📍 Equal Earth Projection
🟢 An equal-area pseudocylindrical projection designed for world maps.
🟢 Developed in 2018 by an international team of cartographers.
🟢 Its meridians are equally spaced and do not curve excessively outward.
🟢 Uses loosely approximate elliptical arcs, giving it an appearance closer to a globe.
🟢 Promoted by Togo’s #CorrectTheMap campaign.

📍 Advantage of Equal Earth
🟢 Preserves the relative areas of continents and countries more accurately.
🟢 Provides a better visual understanding of the true proportions of global landmasses.

📍 Important Caveat
🟢 The UN resolution is not legally binding.
🟢 It does not compel countries to stop using the Mercator projection.
🟢 However, it could influence school textbooks, digital technologies and mapping systems.

📍 Prelims Quick Recall
Mercator → 1569 → Gerardus Mercator → Cylindrical → Navigation → Area distortion

Equal Earth → 2018 → Equal-area pseudocylindrical → Accurate land-area representation → #CorrectTheMap

🔆 Tibetan Plateau: Climate Change & Glacial Retreat

📍 Why in News?
🟢 Rising temperatures have caused glacier retreat on the Tibetan Plateau, linked to the August 26 glacial collapse on the Nepal–China border.

📍 About Tibetan Plateau
🟢 Also known as the “Roof of the World” and Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.
🟢 Located in southwestern China, between the Kunlun Mountains in the north and Himalayas in the south.
🟢 Extends from the Pamir Plateau in the west towards the eastern highlands near the Loess Plateau.

📍 Formation
🟢 Around 45 million years ago, the northward-moving Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate.
🟢 Compression caused folding, faulting and crustal thickening, resulting in uplift.
🟢 This process formed the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau; the plateau continues to rise slowly.

📍 Key Features
🟢 Climate: Cold and dry due to high elevation; very cold winters and short, cool summers.
🟢 Relief: High plains, rugged mountains, deep valleys and grasslands.
🟢 Terrain: Northern areas include cold deserts; the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is among the deepest canyons.
🟢 Glaciers: 46,000+ glaciers.
🟢 Lakes: Both saltwater and freshwater lakes.

📍 Major Rivers Originating Here
🟢 Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Yellow River and Mekong.

📍 Important Lakes
🟢 Saltwater: Qinghai Lake, Namtso.
🟢 Freshwater: Manasarovar, Yamdrok and Pangong Tso.

📍 Role in Climate & Indian Monsoon
🟢 Strong summer heating creates a low-pressure area over the plateau.
🟢 This draws moist ocean winds, supporting the Southwest Monsoon and influencing rainfall in India.
🟢 Vegetation ranges from alpine shrublands and sedge meadows to alpine steppe, becoming progressively drier from southeast to northwest.

📍 Flora & Fauna
🟢 Vegetation includes Kobresia, Carex, alpine forbs, juniper, dwarf rhododendron, Caragana and dwarf willow.
🟢 Fauna includes Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan gazelle, blue sheep and white-lipped deer.
🟢 Predators include snow leopard, grey wolf and brown bear.

📍 Gangdise Mountains (Kailas Range)
🟢 Located in southwestern Tibet, running broadly parallel to the Himalayas.
🟢 Also called Gangdise Shan/Kailas Range and considered part of the Transhimalaya.
🟢 Mt. Loinbo Kangri: 7,095 m — highest peak.
🟢 Mt. Kailash: 6,656 m — main peak.
🟢 Forms a watershed between inland drainage and the Indian Ocean drainage system.
🟢 Has a history of volcanic activity, with hot springs and geysers still present.

📍 Prelims Quick Recall
Tibetan Plateau → Roof of the World → Qinghai–Tibet → Indian–Eurasian Plate collision → Major Asian river source → Summer heating → Southwest Monsoon influence → 46,000+ glaciers.

📌 Mains Practice Question

🔆 Super El Niño's Deadly Toll: Projected Impacts on India and the World

📍 Projected Heat-Related Mortality
🟢 A new report by the Climate Impact Lab estimates that India could suffer approximately 15,800 additional heat-related deaths (with a margin of 1,600) between September 2026 and February 2027.
🟢 Globally, the event is projected to cause 451,000 additional heat-related deaths during its first six months, severely impacting regions like Indonesia (19,300 deaths), Brazil (13,300 deaths), and the Sahel region in Africa (66,800 deaths).

📍 The 'Super' El Niño Phenomenon
🟢 This informal "Super El Niño" designation reflects exceptionally strong conditions, with sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific already recording more than 3°C above normal.
🟢 Described by researchers as a "postcard from our future," the current climate event is bringing extreme temperatures today that were originally projected to materialize 20 years later under climate change models. 🟢 Its disruptive effects are already manifesting globally, contributing to conditions conducive to wildfires in Indonesia and drought-related agricultural shocks in Central America.

📍 Cascading Domestic Impacts: Rainfall Deficit & Energy Stress
🟢 The intense El Niño has significantly disrupted the southwest monsoon, leaving India with a national rainfall deficit of approximately 15% below normal up to September 22, 2026, with the southern and eastern regions facing the largest shortfalls.
🟢 Unseasonably hot weather has triggered a massive surge in electricity demand, resulting in nearly 40% of India's coal-fired power plants reporting critically low fuel stocks.

📍 Mains Practice Question
🟢 "The escalating frequency of extreme weather events, such as the current 'Super El Niño', acts as a 'postcard from our future'." Evaluate the multidimensional vulnerabilities exposed by such climate anomalies on India's public health infrastructure, energy security, and monsoon-dependent agriculture.
