π Mercator Map vs Equal Earth Projection
π Why in News?
π’ The United Nations General Assembly voted to phase out the traditional Mercator map in favour of the Equal Earth projection to provide a more accurate representation of global landmass proportions.
π About Mercator Map
π’ A cylindrical map projection, mathematically derived.
π’ Longitudes and latitudes intersect at 90Β° angles.
π’ Longitudes are evenly spaced, while latitudes become increasingly farther apart away from the Equator.
π’ The Equator lies at the centre of the map.
π’ Designed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator, primarily to aid navigation.
π Major Limitation
π’ Mercator projection distorts area, especially towards the poles.
π’ Regions near the Equator appear relatively smaller, while high-latitude regions appear disproportionately larger.
π’ Example: Greenland can appear comparable in size to Africa, although Africa is about 14 times larger.
π Equal Earth Projection
π’ An equal-area pseudocylindrical projection designed for world maps.
π’ Developed in 2018 by an international team of cartographers.
π’ Its meridians are equally spaced and do not curve excessively outward.
π’ Uses loosely approximate elliptical arcs, giving it an appearance closer to a globe.
π’ Promoted by Togoβs #CorrectTheMap campaign.
π Advantage of Equal Earth
π’ Preserves the relative areas of continents and countries more accurately.
π’ Provides a better visual understanding of the true proportions of global landmasses.
π Important Caveat
π’ The UN resolution is not legally binding.
π’ It does not compel countries to stop using the Mercator projection.
π’ However, it could influence school textbooks, digital technologies and mapping systems.

π Tibetan Plateau: Climate Change & Glacial Retreat
π Why in News?
π’ Rising temperatures have caused glacier retreat on the Tibetan Plateau, linked to the August 26 glacial collapse on the NepalβChina border.
π About Tibetan Plateau
π’ Also known as the βRoof of the Worldβ and QinghaiβTibet Plateau.
π’ Located in southwestern China, between the Kunlun Mountains in the north and Himalayas in the south.
π’ Extends from the Pamir Plateau in the west towards the eastern highlands near the Loess Plateau.
π Formation
π’ Around 45 million years ago, the northward-moving Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate.
π’ Compression caused folding, faulting and crustal thickening, resulting in uplift.
π’ This process formed the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau; the plateau continues to rise slowly.
π Key Features
π’ Climate: Cold and dry due to high elevation; very cold winters and short, cool summers.
π’ Relief: High plains, rugged mountains, deep valleys and grasslands.
π’ Terrain: Northern areas include cold deserts; the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is among the deepest canyons.
π’ Glaciers: 46,000+ glaciers.
π’ Lakes: Both saltwater and freshwater lakes.
π Major Rivers Originating Here
π’ Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Yellow River and Mekong.
π Important Lakes
π’ Saltwater: Qinghai Lake, Namtso.
π’ Freshwater: Manasarovar, Yamdrok and Pangong Tso.
π Role in Climate & Indian Monsoon
π’ Strong summer heating creates a low-pressure area over the plateau.
π’ This draws moist ocean winds, supporting the Southwest Monsoon and influencing rainfall in India.
π’ Vegetation ranges from alpine shrublands and sedge meadows to alpine steppe, becoming progressively drier from southeast to northwest.
π Flora & Fauna
π’ Vegetation includes Kobresia, Carex, alpine forbs, juniper, dwarf rhododendron, Caragana and dwarf willow.
π’ Fauna includes Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan gazelle, blue sheep and white-lipped deer.
π’ Predators include snow leopard, grey wolf and brown bear.
π Gangdise Mountains (Kailas Range)
π’ Located in southwestern Tibet, running broadly parallel to the Himalayas.
π’ Also called Gangdise Shan/Kailas Range and considered part of the Transhimalaya.
π’ Mt. Loinbo Kangri: 7,095 m β highest peak.
π’ Mt. Kailash: 6,656 m β main peak.
π’ Forms a watershed between inland drainage and the Indian Ocean drainage system.
π’ Has a history of volcanic activity, with hot springs and geysers still present.
π Prelims Quick Recall
Tibetan Plateau β Roof of the World β QinghaiβTibet β IndianβEurasian Plate collision β Major Asian river source β Summer heating β Southwest Monsoon influence β 46,000+ glaciers.
