Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced Conservative accusations Tuesday that he misled the House of Commons when he said in September that he had no knowledge of Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian Waffen-SS veteran who was invited to attend a speech in Parliament by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Tuesday that Mr. Trudeau should resign after it emerged Mr. Hunka had received a personal invitation from the Prime Minister to a reception in Toronto for the Ukrainian President later that evening.

Mr. Trudeau โ€œhas been claiming for months that he had no involvement in or knowledge of the invitation of a former Nazi soldier to the visit of the Ukrainian President,โ€ Mr. Poilievre said.

He added that since Mr. Trudeau supported the resignation of Mr. Rota, he should hold himself to the same standard and โ€œadmit that he is not fit for office.โ€

Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman said โ€the invitation had the Prime Ministerโ€™s name on it. It came from him, and for months he said only the Speaker invited him. It turned out not to be true.โ€

Liberal, Bloc, NDP MPs suspend ArriveCan hearings after reading โ€˜scaryโ€™ secret report

Liberal, Bloc Quรฉbรฉcois and NDP MPs suddenly suspended parliamentary hearings related to ArriveCan and contracting misconduct allegations Wednesday after reading what one Liberal described as a โ€œscaryโ€ secret preliminary report by a federal investigator.

They say any further hearings could put at risk investigations by the Canada Border Services Agency, which produced the report, and the RCMP.

The three parties voted together to end any further questioning of Michel Lafleur, the federal investigator, and made clear that they expect the committee will focus on other topics at future meetings.

Members of the House of Commons committee on government operations have been reviewing how costs for the ArriveCan app for international travellers ballooned to $54-million and related IT procurement issues for months.

Canada must end reliance on cheap foreign labour, minister says

Canadaโ€™s immigration minister is taking steps to curb the countryโ€™s dependence on temporary foreign labour and international students, prompting pushback from business groups that say there arenโ€™t enough domestic workers available to sustain parts of the economy.

Marc Miller introduced a limit on foreign student visas last month, cutting them by 35 per cent for this year. He will announce further changes soon to restrict studentsโ€™ off-campus work hours and heโ€™s also reviewing the countryโ€™s temporary foreign worker program.

We have gotten addicted to temporary foreign workers. Any large industry trying to make ends meet will look at the ability to drive down wages. There is an incentive to drive labour costs down. Itโ€™s something thatโ€™ll require a larger discussion.

Miller said.

Statistics Canada estimates there are more than 2.5 million non-permanent residents, over six per cent of the population, and they play a key role in filling the labour-force gaps left by an aging population.

Pharmacare deadline: Minister 'confident' will table legislation by March 1

Health Minister Mark Holland says he has โ€œevery confidenceโ€ his government can deliver pharmacare legislation by the promised March 1 deadline, and that the Liberals are โ€œnot pulling the fire alarmโ€ on their confidence-and-supply deal with the NDP over the issue.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said this week there will be โ€œrepercussionsโ€ if the Liberals donโ€™t table a sufficient piece of pharmacare framework legislation by next month, and signalled heโ€™ll consider a missed deadline to mean theyโ€™ve โ€œwalked awayโ€ from their confidence-and-supply agreement.

The pact sees the NDP prop up the Liberals until 2025 in exchange for progress on key priorities, including pharmacare, for which the parties have already extended the deadline once before.

๐Ÿ’ŠOpioid 25 times more powerful than fentanyl detected in Quebec City region

A synthetic opioid 25 times more powerful than fentanyl has made its way to the Quebec City region, where public health officials reported Saturday they have detected the dangerous compound in pale green tablets that mimic the appearance of other prescription opioids.

The Quebec City regional public health authority warned the compound, protonitazepyne, presents a high risk of overdose, which may require several doses of the life-saving medication naloxone.

Health Canada first detected the substance in 2023 and would go on to positively identify it in a total of 25 drug samples by the end of the year. Public health officials working in the Quebec City-area now say it has been increasingly found in the Montreal area since the beginning of 2024.

The alcohol excise tax is set to go up by 4.7 per cent, which Kelowna-Lake Country MP Tracy Gray says will cost Canadians about $100 million extra in 2024-25.

12 Ontario men, 1 American arrested in Niagara for trafficking young people: police

Thirteen men have been arrested at a Niagara Falls hotel and charged in connection with human trafficking of young people, police say.

The suspects, who range in age from 20 to 60 years old, face charges related to child luring, obtaining sexual services and inviting sexual exploitation of a young person, say Niagara police.

The arrests took place between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, and come after the Niagara Regional Police Service's human trafficking unit connected online with young people believed to be offering sexual services for money.

๐Ÿ˜ Housing minister denies he ignored warning about immigration levels and housing supply

Housing Minister Sean Fraser said he didnโ€™t ignore warnings as immigration minister about the number of new Canadians the country was accepting exceeding the number of houses the country was building.

The Canadian Press reported last month that an internal report produced two years ago warned that the number of new immigrants was outpacing Canadaโ€™s home construction industry, which would strain supply and push prices higher.

Fraser said he didnโ€™t ignore the warning about housing issues, but rather looked at other aspects of the immigration question, including the industries that would run short of people if they didnโ€™t have new Canadians arriving.

๐Ÿš™ Police seize 53 stolen vehicles at Port of Montreal

Quebec provincial police and specialized teams have seized 53 stolen vehicles from the Port of Montreal. 26 containers were searched at the port, leading to the massive seizure.

The police operation was carried out in connection with the overseas export of stolen vehicles, police said.

A new mixed police squad dedicated to vehicle theft, the Escouade rรฉgionale mixte vol de vรฉhicules (ERM), was introduced last week and took part in the operation.

Last week, the federal government promised $28 million in new money to help fight the export of stolen vehicles by giving the Canada Border Services Agency more capacity to detect and search containers with stolen vehicles inside.

๐Ÿ’ธ Gaps in oversight of ArriveCan app are โ€˜completely unacceptableโ€™

Canada Border Services Agency president Erin Oโ€™Gorman said inadequate oversight of government spending is โ€œcompletely unacceptableโ€ and vowed to fix the issue after the Auditor-General sharply criticized her department over its poor management and record keeping as the cost of the ArriveCan app grew to nearly $60-million.

Auditor-General Karen Hoganโ€™s Monday report raised several strong concerns.

I have to say that I am deeply concerned by what this audit didnโ€™t find. We didnโ€™t find records to accurately show how much was spent on what, who did the work, or how and why contracting decisions were made. And that paper trail should have existed.

Hogan stated.

The report also raised red flags about agency employees involved with the ArriveCan project being invited to dinners and other activities by private vendors.

Court says Trudeau, justice minister 'failed' Canadians by letting judicial vacancies build up

A scathing Federal Court decision says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal justice minister have "failed" Canadians seeking timely justice by letting the number of judicial vacancies reach a state of crisis.

The case, brought forward by human rights lawyer Yavar Hameed, sends a clear message to the federal government about the urgent need to reduce the number of vacancies.

Last spring, Chief Justice Richard Wagner sent Trudeau a letter warning of an "untenable" situation in Canadian courtrooms.

It is imperative for the Prime Minister's Office to give this issue the importance it deserves and for appointments to be made in a timely manner โ€ฆThe government's inertia regarding vacancies and the absence of satisfactory explanations for these delays are disconcerting.

Richard Wagner said.

๐Ÿฉบ Feds offer loan forgiveness for some doctors, nurses

In a bid to increase the number of doctors and nurses practising in rural and remote areas, the federal government said Tuesday it's increasing forgivable loans for some students.

Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault said Ottawa is offering a 50 per cent increase in forgivable loans for doctors and nurses who work in rural and remote communities.

Boissonnault said up to $60,000 will be forgiven for a family physician or family medicine resident, and up to $30,000 for a nurse or nurse practitioner with a Canada Student Loan.

An estimated 3,000 doctors and nurses will benefit from the program this fiscal year, Boissonnault said.

๐Ÿ‘จImmigration surge fuels male population boom in Canada

An influx of new immigrants is shifting Canadaโ€™s gender ratio, as a higher share of male newcomers helps squeeze the female majority to its smallest margin in decades.

The population of adult men grew 3.4 per cent over the past year, while women rose 2.9 per cent, making the spread between the growth of the two groups the widest in nearly 50 years of records.

The gap is even larger in the 25-to-44 age group, in which men have seen a 4.8 per cent jump and women a 3.9 per cent increase. There are 141,000 more men than women in this age bracket as of January, compared with a long-run average difference of zero.

The figures highlight the countryโ€™s changing demographic trends due to its liberal immigration policy.
