International leaders assembled in Montreal on Saturday for the Global Progress Action Summit, a gathering of progressive leaders from around the world.

Among other political figures taking part in the summit were the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, the former Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, and the leader of the UK Labour Party, Keir Starmer. More than 15 countries were represented.

“If we’re not responding to where people are (in their) daily life, then we’re not going to be connecting with them,” Trudeau said during a panel discussion.

📈Canada's inflation rate increases to 4%

Canada's inflation rate jumped higher last month, to an annual pace of four per cent, mostly because of an increase in gasoline prices.

Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that the inflation rate ticked higher by 0.7 percentage points, in large part because gasoline prices increased on an annual basis for the first time since January.

Pump prices increased by 4.6 per cent in August alone, and are up by 0.8 per cent compared to where they were a year ago.

🏠 Canada's housing crisis will take years to solve: finance minister

An affordable housing crisis that is hurting the Canadian government's popularity will take years to resolve, even if construction hits an 80-year high, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Saturday.

"It will take all of us — the federal government and the provinces, cities and towns, the private sector and non-profits ... working together in common cause, not for weeks or months, but for years," Freeland said.

"Building the homes a growing Canada needs will require another great national effort," she told a Montreal conference, saying the country would have to build homes at a speed and scale not seen since the 1940s and 1950s.

In a bid to boost supply, the government has said it will remove the federal 5 per cent GST on the construction of new rental apartment buildings and is telling cities to do more to address the issue.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Tuesday to provide Canadians with hard evidence that agents of the Indian government were behind the slaying of a prominent Sikh leader that has led to a deep chill in Indo-Canadian relations.

“The Prime Minister needs to come clean with all the facts. We need to know all the evidence possible so that Canadians can make judgments on that,” Poilievre told reporters.

The Prime Minister announced Monday that Ottawa had credible intelligence that India carried out the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and it expelled India’s top foreign intelligence officer in the High Commission in Ottawa.

On Tuesday, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denied the allegations and said he was expelling a Canadian diplomat in turn. He said the New Delhi-based diplomat had five days to leave the country.

A new study by Léger finds that Quebec is still the most anti-monarchy province in Canada. 63% of Canadians believe that it’s time for Canada to reconsider its ties to the British Monarchy, including 78% of Quebecers, where agreement with the sentiment is highest.

Support for the monarchy among the provinces is highest in British Columbia, where a majority (55%) still believe it’s time for Canada to reconsider its ties to the monarchy now that Charles III is king.

The study also found that half of Canadians (51%), including 63% of Quebecers, agree that the monarchy in Canada is outdated and does not have a place in the 21st century.

1 Million March 4 Children protests will take place in cities across Canada on Sept. 20

The "1 Million March 4 Children" will be held in cities across the country on Wednesday. The protests will start at 9 a.m. with a school walk out and continue with a march at 11 a.m.

The group’s site says it advocates for the “elimination of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools.”

“Brothers and Sisters of Humanity, join us in the March to Protect Our Children From Indoctrination and Sexualization,” reads the site.

Several pro-LGBT groups have promised to counter-protest the demonstration.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he "could have" and "should have" moved faster on making affordable housing a priority for his government — an insight that comes as his government faces the worst polling it's seen since coming to power.

"I will say it hasn't been enough," Trudeau said in an interview. "We should have, could have moved faster. Absolutely. There's always more to do."

Trudeau said repeatedly that he believes Canadians would feel even more squeezed under a Conservative government. He also added he'd love "to wave a federal magic wand" to get more homes and purpose-built rental units built in municipalities.

Trudeau's mood changes as quickly as the weather. At one point, he argues housing is not the government's primary concern. Then, he admits he should have done more.

Developers who own ex-Greenbelt land also benefited from province's order to expand Hamilton urban boundary

Two Hamilton developers who successfully influenced the Ford government to remove their land from the Greenbelt simultaneously benefited from a provincial order to expand the city's urban boundary.

The same day in 2022 the province announced its plans to remove three Hamilton sites from the Greenbelt, it also opened up an additional 2,200 hectares of local countryside for development.

The move came one year after Hamilton council voted not to expand its boundary and has since prompted one councillor to say Premier Doug Ford is allowing a "tsunami" of development on rural land, instead of the "small" waves the city once envisioned.

Canada Post breaking law by gathering info from envelopes, parcels: watchdog

The federal privacy watchdog says Canada Post is breaking the law by gleaning information from the outsides of envelopes and packages to help build marketing lists that it rents to businesses.

The office of privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne says information collected for the marketing program includes data about where individuals live and what type of online shopping they do, based on who sends them packages.

The commissioner found Canada Post had not obtained authorization from individuals to indirectly collect such personal information.

In a report on his office's investigation, Dufresne says this amounts to a violation of section 5 of the Privacy Act.

More than 1,000 people reportedly gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa at the peak of the demonstration.

Organizers of the marches said they were protesting the "premature sexualization and potentially harmful indoctrination" of children.

🏠 Feds tell people struggling to find housing to call 'local authorities'

Housing Minister Sean Fraser, during a press conference on Monday, responded to reporters who asked how the government’s recent measures announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau— including the removal of the GST from construction of rental apartments — will help people find affordable homes right now.

“You’ve got to realize the tools that we have at the federal level … will take a significant period of time to grow the housing stock, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” Fraser said. “But people who are without an option today need to reach out to their local authorities who are actually managing the on-the-ground supports. The situation varies, obviously, from community to community.”

Social media lit up at Fraser’s use of “local authorities,” which can be used to describe the police.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre saw it as an opportunity to criticize the Liberal government: “After the Liberals doubled housing costs, Trudeau’s housing minister tells Canadians to call ‘local authorities’ to help them find a place to live,” Poilievre wrote on X.

'It was a mistake:' Ford reversing Ontario government's decision to open Greenbelt

Premier Doug Ford said he will be reversing his government’s decision to open the Greenbelt to developers.

Ford made the announcement on Thursday afternoon at a news conference in Niagara Falls where his caucus has gathered for a party retreat.

"I made a promise to you that I wouldn't touch the Greenbelt. I broke that promise. And for that, I'm very, very sorry. I pride myself on keeping our promises. It was a mistake to open the Greenbelt. It was a mistake to establish a process that moves too fast,” Ford told reporters.

Ford said the process involved in selecting what parcels of land would be removed from the Greenbelt left “too much room for some people to benefit over others.”

"It caused people to question our motives. As a first step, to earn back your trust, I'll be reversing the changes we made and won't make any changes to the Greenbelt in the future,” Ford said.

💰Alberta releases pension plan report, seeks 53% of CPP's assets

Albertans could contribute less and receive more in benefits should the province create its own pension plan, but the program would also potentially face complex withdrawal negotiations, steep operating costs, and relies on receiving more than half of the Canada Pension’s Plan’s assets.

The findings were set out Thursday with the release of the government-commissioned pension plan report from Lifeworks.

It confirms that it is possible for Alberta to leave the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), without the approval of other provinces, but also that the CPP Act does not compel Ottawa to negotiate with a withdrawing province over the division of the CPP’s assets and liabilities.

It assumes Alberta — home to roughly 12 per cent of Canada’s population — will receive 53 per cent of the CPP’s base assets, some $334 billion, based on what it deems to be “equal to Albertans’ contributions less benefit payments and expenses accumulated with net investment earnings.”

Thursday’s report contends that Alberta workers and businesses have put $60 billion more into the CPP than has been paid out to Albertans since its inception in 1966.

When asked if the move was about gaining leverage against Ottawa, Danielle Smith emphasized that Albertans will have the final say in a referendum.

🎓Ottawa forecasts 1.4 million international student applications a year by 2027

The number of foreign students applying to come to Canada each year is forecast by the federal immigration department to rise to 1.4 million by 2027, an internal policy document says, which also raises concerns that such growth is “unsustainable.”

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada forecast the rapid rise in the number of foreign students in a paper last month about establishing a class of “trusted” universities and colleges, which would qualify for faster processing of international student study permits.

The document says that from 2019 to 2022 study permit applications for overseas students have increased by nearly 300,000 a year.

“By 2027, volumes are forecasted to nearly double to 1.4 million applications per year,” it says.

Housing Minister Sean Fraser floated the prospect of a cap on international student numbers at the cabinet retreat in Charlottetown last month, saying the number of foreign students is putting pressure on rental markets and driving up costs.

CAHN receives funding from both the Canadian government (With government funding beginning in 2020 and the CAHN receiving $268'400 in from government grants in 2022 alone) and Canadian banking institutions (Roughly $250'000 from the Bank of Montreal in 2020 alone). There have been myriad controversies surrounding their quality of work, allegations, and more, some of which include:

-In October 2022 The Government of Saskatchewan's Ministry of Education declining to use a CAHN anti-racism teacher toolkit because, among other reasons, "The toolkit does not meet criteria such as being high quality, free from bias as reasonably possible..."

-CAHN board member Richard Warman filed a defamation lawsuit against Jonathan and Barbara Kay for publishing tweets critical of CAHN's connection to the American Antifa movement. On November 10th, 2022 the Ontario Superior Court of Justice dismissed the defamation lawsuit, ruling that the tweets in question were not defamatory. Quoting from Judge David Dwoskin:

The evidence disclosed that CAHN did in fact assist Antifa and that the movement has been violent. The Kays submission, which I accept, is that a human rights network like CAHN arguably (except in the most extreme circumstances) should not support a violent movement, and to do so, to most reasonable observers, would not be a "good look". -In September 2023 Canadian lawyer, who is also a non-White woman and child of immigrants, Caryma Sa'd and Elisa Hategan released an article and 84 page report titled "The HateGate Affair: Unmasking Canada's Hate Industry". This investigation exposed how the Canadian government largely ignored their own intelligence and security services who informed them that the 2022 Freedom Protesters and associated movements were not a threat to national security, and instead made decisions, including the decision to invoke the Emergencies Act for the only time in Canadian history, based on CAHN's low quality work. The report also exposed how "mainstream media" largely cited CAHN in their slander towards freedom loving Canadians.

🇨🇦🇺🇦 Ukrainian President Zelensky arrives in Ottawa for first time since war began

Ukrainian president Zelensky and his wife arrived in Ottawa late Thursday night for his first official visit to Canada since the war began.

The pair were greeted on the tarmac by a small delegation that included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Ukraine’s ambassador to Canada, Yuliya Kovaliv.

On Friday Zelensky will meet with top Canadian officials and members of the Ukrainian Canadian community. Zelensky is also set to address Parliament – his first in-person address since the war began.

He and Trudeau are expected to sign an agreement to continue strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Relations between Canada and India are rapidly deteriorating after Justin Trudeau said the Canadian government is investigating "credible allegations" about the possible involvement of Indian government agents in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

▪️Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist leader in B.C. and a Canadian citizen, was killed outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., on June 18. Nijjar supported a Sikh homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state and was designated by India as a "terrorist" in July 2020. Today, Canada has the largest population of Sikhs outside of the northern Indian state of Punjab.

Prior to that, on June 4, a Khalistani parade was held in Brampton, Ont., featuring a float depicting the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. The act sparked outrage from the Indian government.

In early September, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Prime Minister Trudeau a cold reception at the G20 summit in New Delhi, expressing his concern about Sikh activities in Canada. The two leaders did not hold a bilateral meeting. Ottawa suspended talks on a proposed trade treaty with India.

🔹On Monday, Sept. 18, Trudeau said that in investigation into Nijjar's death, the government has gathered both human and signals intelligence that points to Indian involvement. Trudeau then called for India's cooperation in the investigation. Shortly after Trudeau's remarks, Canada expelled a senior Indian diplomat from the country.

🔹India's foreign ministry said Tuesday that it had given the senior Canadian diplomat five days to leave the country.

🔹On Wednesday, a spokesman for Global Affairs Canada confirmed that Canada would pull some of its staff out of the country, citing threats on social media. At the same time, India issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens to be cautious when traveling to Canada.

🔹On Thursday, India announced it was suspending new visas for Canadians, and asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country.

Sikh separatist on India’s most wanted list murdered in Winnipeg

Indian media is reporting that Sukhdool Singh Gill, who also goes by the alias Sukha Duneke, was shot and killed in Winnipeg on Wednesday, in what media is describing as a gang-related murder.

Winnipeg Police confirmed in a statement that a 39-year-old Sukhdool Singh Gill has been idenitifed as the victim in an ongoing homicide investigation but did not elaborate on his alleged gang connections.

On Wednesday, India’s National Investigation Agency released a list of 43 individuals accused of being involved in terror or gang related activities, some with links in Canada. Duneke was ranked no. 33 on the list.

Ranked no. 1 is Lawrence Bishnoi, whose gang has apparently already claimed responsibility for the killing of Duneke.
