March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often causing debilitating period pain, pain with sex, irregular bleeding, gastrointestinal symptoms, and sometimes infertility. It affects about 10% of reproductive-age women worldwide, yet it is one of the most underfunded diseases in the world relative to its impact. On average, it takes 7–10 years to get a diagnosis, and it is often delayed due to stigma and the dismissal of symptoms as "normal." There is currently no known cause or cure, but certain medications, hormonal therapy, or surgical interventions may improve quality of life.
