The centrepiece of the new building, which has a plaque in memory of the longstanding receptionist Kath Phipps in its entrance way, is a spiral staircase adorned with all the trophies the club have won in their history.

The idea is that, as they ascend to their lounge area, to relax and eat, the players are reminded of why they are at the club.

The flow of the building was key and thought has been put into the design of every room to ensure the players can perform at their peak. It means that the placement of each meeting room and recovery space has been carefully considered.

Historically it was described as a dark labyrinth, whereas now all the walls are light oak and windows and ceiling lights have been installed to make the building feel bigger and more welcoming.

Each floor is open so Amorim, the head coach, Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive, will liaise with their colleagues in open-plan spaces, with private offices around the side should they need them. [Charlotte Duncker] #MUFC

Small enhancements have been made to enable staff to keep an even closer eye on the players and to bring them in line with modern-day technology.

Smart urinals are in place in the new, more spacious dressing room, to let players and staff know if they are dehydrated.

That’s an upgrade from the previous training ground, where they had a piece of paper above each urinal with a colour chart to advise players if they were dehydrated.

Modernisation has certainly been key to the Carrington rebuild, with new features such as a high-altitude training room, sleeping pods, dry flotation tanks, red-light therapy, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and cryotherapy pods all introduced as part of a drive to get them up to the standard of other elite European clubs.

As recently as a few weeks ago, some influential figures at Manchester United still felt signing Benjamin Sesko this summer was not especially plausible.

RB Leipzig’s asking price was high, potentially too high for a player with a modest scoring record in the Bundesliga.
You might say the feeling was mutual.

While in talks with Arsenal, some familiar with the matter — who, like others who spoke to The Athletic, remain anonymous to protect relationships — say Sesko at that point considered himself beyond joining a club without European football, who had finished 15th in the Premier League, 32 points adrift of their counterparts at the Emirates.

Further meetings between Amorim, Berrada and Wilcox during the United States leg of the pre-season tour, held at Manchester United’s training base and the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Chicago, resulted in Sesko emerging as their priority in the position.

Joel and Avram Glazer were also staying at the same hotel at the same time for a period in the second week of the trip, and, as is customary on major transfers, they agreed to the plan, although they were not key parts of the decision-making process.

The decision to go for Sesko had been made before their arrival.

Amorim held a Zoom meeting with Sesko last week, while director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves met his agent Elvis Basanovic on multiple occasions for initial talks on personal terms and commission fees.

Hargreaves and Vivell spent the subsequent days in Leipzig finalising a deal. Talks between the two clubs were described as professional, completed in only a few days, in sharp contrast to negotiations with Brentford for Mbeumo.
