The government has notified the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)

What is CAA?

- The Citizenship Amendment Act was enacted to provide a path to Indian citizenship for religious minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis who faced persecution in Muslim-majority countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

- The amendment reduces the residency requirement for naturalization from twelve years to six years.

- The CAA was passed by the Parliament on December 11, 2019, and was notified on December 12 of the same year. However, its implementation was delayed as the rules were not notified.

- The Centre notified the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act on 11 March 2024.
