Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned people against “digital arrest” frauds on Sunday in the 115th edition of his Mann Ki Baat radio address.

DIGITAL ARREST:

In this cybercrime method is that fraudsters pose as law enforcement officials such as police, Enforcement DirectorateCBI, among others, and manipulate them into believing that they have committed some serious crime.
In certain cases, the victims are “digitally arrested”, and forced to stay visible over Skype or other video conferencing platforms to the criminals until their demands are met.

The cyber fraudsters deceive the victim into believing that he or she has been put under ‘digital arrest’ and will be prosecuted if they do not pay the scamsters a huge amount of money.

Background:

In 1967, the Supreme Court in S. Azeez Basha v Union of India held that AMU was neither established nor administered by the Muslim minority — it came into existence through an Act of the central legislature — and did not, therefore, qualify as a minority institution under Article 30 of the Constitution.

1981- the government amended AMU Act, saying it was established by muslim community to promote cultural & educational advancement of muslims in India.

2005- AMU ,first time provided 50% reservation for Muslims in postgraduate medical programs.

Next year Allahabad HC struck down both university order and 1981 amendment on the ground that AMU was not a minority institution.

HC order was challenged in SC .

Nov 2024- SC overruled its earlier verdict, which held that AMU was not a minority institution.

Minority status meaning:
Under art 15(5) of Constitution, minority educational institutions are exempt from reserving seats for SCs and STs.
SC uphold the constitutional validity of UP Madrasa education Act 2024.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna sworn in as 51st Chief Justice of India ( CJI).

Notable judgment of Justice Khanna, who had sat in over 450 Benches in the apex court, was his verdict giving the thumbs-up to EVMs while declining to revive paper ballots.

Chief Justice Khanna, in his decision to grant former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal interim bail, had termed personal liberty a sacrosanct right on finding that the latter had been incarcerated for over 90 days in the liquor policy case.
