After being stranded for over nine months,NASA astronauts SunitaWilliams and ButchWilmore are set to undock from the International Space Station on Wednesday and begin their 17-hour journey back to Earth.
Recently India became the 4th country (after US, Russia, China) to acquire Docking -undocking capabilities in Space.

Space Docking - process by which 2 fast moving spacecraft are put into the same orbit, brought closer and finally joined together.

To show this capability India launched SpaDeX mission on Dec 30,2024. In this mission two satellites SDX01 ( CHASER) and SDX02( TARGET) were put in 470 km orbit at a distance of 20 km.
Later they were brought closer using extended locking mechanism.

The undocking manoeuvre was carried out after 2 months.

These capabilities are required when different equipments are to be carried to achieve common mission objective, to cqrry astronaut & supplies to the space station.

Chandrayan -4 too will utlise this capability.

It will also be needed by India to set up its own space station by 2035.

India's Remittances:

(Data from Sixth Round of India's Remittances Survey for 2023-24)

When migrants send home part of their earnings in the form of either cash or goods to support their families, these transfers are known as Remittances.

Paper also highlighted that India's stock of international migrants has tripled from 6.6 million in 1990 to 18.5 million in 2024.

Key Highlights

Status: India has consistently been the top recipient of remittances globally since 2008. (World Bank)

Remittances have more than doubled from US$ 55.6 billion in 2010-11 to US$ 118.7 billion in 2023-24.

As a ratio to GDP, India's remittances have been around 3% of GDP since 2000.

Source Countries: The share of advanced economies in India's inward remittances has risen, surpassing the share of Gulf economies (such as UAE), reflecting a shift in migration pattern towards skilled Indian diaspora.

Remittances from the United States (largest contributor) and the United Kingdom together nearly doubled to 40% of the remittances.

State-wise Distribution:

Maharashtra,
followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu continue to be the dominant recipient states.

Significance of Remittances:

What is Sahyog portal?
The SAHYOG portal was “developed to automate the process of sending notices to intermediaries by the Appropriate Government or its agency under IT Act, 2000 to facilitate the removal or disabling of access to any information, data or communication link being used to commit an unlawful act,” the Centre says on the site.

Legal Framework: IT Act, 2000 & Key Provisions

Section 69A – Content Blocking Power
Empowers the government to block access to online information in the interest of sovereignty, security, and public order, or to prevent incitement to an offence.
Requires written orders and procedural safeguards before action is taken.
Upheld by the Supreme Court in Shreya Singhal vs Union of India (2015), which recognized its safeguards against misuse.

Section 79 – Intermediary Liability ("Safe Harbour" Provision):

Grants immunity to digital platforms (intermediaries) from liability for third-party content, provided they act as neutral hosts.

Section 79(3)(b): Intermediaries lose immunity if they fail to remove unlawful content upon government notification.
Shreya Singhal Ruling (2015): The SC clarified that intermediaries must comply with court or government orders based on Article 19(2) restrictions (such as national security, defamation, incitement to violence, etc.).
