Canadian PM JustinTrudeau announced today (Jan 6) that he will step down after 9 years in office but will stay on in his post until the party chooses a replacement.

That means Justin Trudeau will still be prime minister on Jan. 20 when US President-elect DonaldTrump takes office.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs that would cripple Canada's economy.

Trudeau, 53, took office in November 2015 and won reelection twice, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers.

But his popularity started dipping two years ago amid public anger over high prices and a housing shortage, and his fortunes never recovered.
Assam coal mine:
About a week since nine miners were trapped in a flooded rat-hole coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, rescue workers retrieved bodies of four miners on Saturday. The other five miners are still missing.
Disasters in coal mines across the northeast, mostly of the hazardous RAT HOLE kind, are frequent.

What is rat hole mining?

It is an illegal and highly hazardous method of extracting coal prevalent in certain pockets of India.

This practice involves digging narrow, horizontal tunnels barely large enough for a single person to squeeze through.

These tunnels, often referred to as "rat holes," can extend tens of meters underground.
