Turns out that a piece of fabric placed right on top of the speaker is essential to the way sound dissipates inside the cup so now it's more or less back to how it sounded. Hmmmm, I sense a huge field for experiments here!

What's scary, you have to tear old cups to get the mounting brackets, so there's no way back xd. I am really glad things ended up fine...
Ah yeah a bit of context I guess xd. Ear pads on my Edifier WH950NB headphones got kinda worn and torn so I had to decide whether it's time to upgrade to Sony XM4 or get new ear pads for $4.
