Kumudini Saxena, a mother of two with a diverse professional background, based out of ghaziabad.

She is a 2001 BSc in Physics graduate from Utkal University and a 2010 MBA graduate from IMT Ghaziabad.

With 17 years of experience in marketing, sales, banking, and automobiles, she worked as an HR Manager at Forever New Clothing Pvt Ltd.

However, she had to quit her job to take care of her newborn.

Determined to continue her career journey, Kumudini started her own business consultancy in 2012. Things were going well until Covid happened.

Unfortunately, the impact of the Covid pandemic caused her business to collapse, leaving her without work for two years.

Due to covid her earning came down from INR 7-8 lakhs per month to 5 lakhs per year. She has had a staff of 10-12 people which was down 3 to 2 people and then was working solo. She was low on confidence.

In February 2023, Kumudini decided to enrol in the course. As she attended classes and completed assignments, her confidence gradually returned. She embraced the concept of freelancing and actively engaged with platforms like LinkedIn and Upwork.

She secured her first client from Jordan even before starting with the course in March 2023.

Subsequently, she obtained clients from Japan and Poland, primarily utilizing the cold mailing strategies taught during the sessions for outreach.

Currently, she successfully manages 20+ clients, and she earned 17 lakhs in 3 months.

She has established her new office in Orissa. She has more recruitment projects in hand.

She is managing her career alongside taking care of her two kids.

She is currently working with an Indian and Russian venture company, which is into infrastructure development, they plan to take their current manpower of 500 to 1000 in less than one year, and she is allotted this project.

She has 20 people working under her, 5 interns and 15 full time employees.

A huge barrier to growth:

Here is how my mother helped me become the person I am today:

👉 She always pushed me to focus on studying - because that was my accessible pathway to grow. She always reminded me that we have no other escape from poverty. She told me to ignore everything else other than studies. Sometimes it swung too much to the other side because she wouldn’t let me do extra curricular activities even. But still, being able to obsessively focus on what is important came from her.

👉 My mother was very ambitious, but she did not really get a chance to fulfil her own ambitions. So she channelised that ambition into me.

👉 I was never asked to help with household chores, nothing that would take too much time. I underestimated earlier how important that was but now I realise. My life partner has also given me the time and space to pursue my destiny instead of being bothered by mundane tasks of running our household. If I have the space and energy to focus on my work it is because the women in my life have always allowed me to do so. I am very grateful for it.

👉 I know of wives who demand that their husbands do equal part of household chores. If my partner was building a business worth tens of millions and I was not, I would think it is better that she focuses on growing the value of that business rather than doing the dishes. After all, I could hire all the help I want, spend a few hours managing them and relax the rest of the time. I would have no delusion that it is harder to run a household of two or four compared to running a corporation with hundreds of employees and thousands of customers. My mother treated me like I was doing the most important work in the world even if I was reading some random book from the local library while she did not have an army of help. Thankfully, she did not tell me or my sister when we were growing up that it is important for us to do the housework like some feminist mothers would do today.

👉 Our family struggled to survive on my father’s salary. My mother stepped out of her comfort zone, hunted for jobs, and became a professional. It took her 7 years of struggle to find a job in communist west bengal but she did not give up. She took pride in doing her job well. As a child, I looked up to my mother’s drive to be good at her work.

👉 It was not an upskilling friendly world back then. But my mother, at the age of 40, did her master's degree when she got a chance. She was told that she will not get a higher scale at her job even if she does a master degree, yet that did not deter her. She was always trying to learn singing, and very passionate about it. I learned from her that there is no limit to learning, learning for the sake of it is worth it.

👉 I really didn’t see my mother taking time out for leisure. We did not have a TV at home. She did not gossip with others in our locality like the other mothers in my locality. If she had extra time, she would cook something for me and my sister. Looking back I realise she always put her kids first, before her own comfort. And I guess I learned the value of being productive from her.

Bonus: My mother loved and cared for me. That is just priceless.

My mother is not perfect, but I am glad I was raised by her. Can’t imagine who I would be otherwise❗️
