Mother of a special needs child got USD 10K contract from a Philippines-based startup

Gayatri Vathsan had about 15 years of work experience in multiple MNCs, mostly as an instructional designer and a writer, when she took a career break in 2014 for personal reasons, leaving behind a pay package of 12-13 LPA.

She planned to get back to work around 2015-2016, but couldn’t do that as she has a special needs’ child, and had only about 3-4 hrs per day of free time available for work.

She could not find part-time remote work opportunities back then.

It would take a few more years before remote work and international talent arbitrage became possible.

In 2023, she attended a remote work bootcamp from Skill Arbitrage so that she could pursue remote work on a part-time basis.

She took assistance from our team to build her Upwork profile, writing outreach messages to her clients, posting actively on LinkedIn and also started learning some skills around generative AI.

In 1 month, she received an invite for a job on her Upwork profile from a Philippines-based AI company from Scale AI.

The client offered her an initial trial project, which she performed successfully and then bagged an annual project of USD 10K!

Her role involves training an AI model that her client is developing for a Big Tech company.

It does not require any technical knowledge of coding, science or mathematics.

She has to work only for 2 hours per day and can take care of her family for the remaining time.

Her confidence levels have shot up.

Gayathri has secured 4 full-time remote job offers through LinkedIn, all of which pay more than her last job!

She had to decline them for now as she only has 3 hours per day to work.

Gayathri is also writing her novel, and she also obtained an offer from a mainstream book publisher on LinkedIn!

This is what happens when you build skills and a demonstrable track record.

Like Gayathri, it is possible for any woman who had to give up her career to prioritise family needs/personal obligations to get back into the workforce through international remote work, even if you just have 2-4 hours per day of free time available.

Would you like to find out how you can jump on the international remote work bandwagon too?

Would you like to know more about the roles that are most in-demand?
It does not matter if you do not have a lot of prior expertise in those areas - with the help of AI you can secure opportunities in about 3-6 months of training.

You just have to follow a step-by-step roadmap.

We will provide the roadmap, show how to find clients, give examples of how to build your track record and even demo some live AI skills that you can use to perform this work in a free 3-day bootcamp this weekend.

It is free, live and online, but no recordings will be available.

You will also have an opportunity to interact with several Skill Arbitrage learners who have actually achieved these results if you attend the bootcamp.

See you in the bootcamp!

Work-from-home moms, meet Priyanka & Komal

Priyanka Karwa, mother of 2, has been working with us remotely from Thane for the past 8 years. She lives with her family.

Hiring working mothers remotely has laid the foundation of our company even before the pandemic.

In 2015, when we were working on legal education at our first startup iPleaders, we were struggling to hire smart and dedicated people.

As a bootstrapped startup, we could not compete with the budget of funded startups and large companies.

We spent hours interviewing and speaking to talented candidates, but many good candidates would not join as they were not convinced about our future.

Others did not want to take the ownership and responsibility that the job required.

Even those who joined left shortly after getting trained with us for brand name jobs that paid them 2x-3x.

That is when we stumbled upon the idea of hiring work-from-home mothers who could not otherwise work in traditional full-time office jobs.

One of our learners recommended that we interview Priyanka Karwa, who lived in the same building.

She had taken tuitions for school kids earlier.

Priyanka started by working part-time for 6 hours. She did very well, and we gave her more responsibilities.

She later went on to head operations in our company.

Today, she heads our placement and freelancing team, which comprises 50+ people, and delivers success to approx. 1600+ students every month.

She also funded the purchase of her husband’s clinic with her earnings so that he could grow his practice as a dentist when he was facing a financial crunch post COVID.

When our content head left, we hired Komal Shah on a part-time basis, a legal and compliance officer with 13+ years multinational experience, to write content for our courses.

There was no way we could hire her normally, she was highly qualified having worked in London and Dublin, but she wanted work from home jobs and we were the only ones who offered work from home job in legal domain that time.

She went on to become the head of the content team later, and today is a co-founder and Chief Knowledge Officer, and heads our Upwork Agency, pitching to startups and remote clients for work that can be performed by our learners.

We realised that in general, work-from-home mothers work harder and are more productive than many people who were working from offices.

They usually have superior problem-solving skills and are more customer-oriented.

We went 50% remote before lockdown in 2017.

Today we have approx. 62% women workforce, of which 60% from small cities.

However, we are sad that millions of women in India are not able to secure such opportunities and have to sacrifice their career to meet their personal obligations, since the remote work revolution was short lived here and organisations insist on working from office.

That is when we decided to support women from India to upskill and work remotely for SMEs, services businesses, startups and professionals in advanced economies like US, UK, Canada, Germany & Dubai.
95% of these businesses are not able to hire high quality talent in their home country, or set up a subsidiary in India or send work to an Indian BPO, but they can work with Indian freelancers directly.

Work-from-home women in India and developing countries have a cost advantage in such roles, and their value-generation is further amplified by using AI.

In the last few months, we have been training work-from-home women, especially those who have some professional experience but had to take a career break for personal reasons, to get back into the workforce by performing remote work using AI skill sets.

You can now have the professional success you deserve without worrying about location.

You don’t have to choose between family and career.
Many of our learners have already secured very promising results in a matter of a few months, which I will share in the coming days.

Do you want to find out how you can get started

Make sure that you join our free, 3-day, live online bootcamp from 13th - 15th January, 2024, 2:00pm - 5:00pm IST- where we will give you the plan, show you how to find high-potential international clients (like the ones Munmun reached out to) and teach you several skills for free.

We will also show you how to use AI to pitch and deliver 10x better results than your peers.

Make sure that you set an alarm to attend, as this bootcamp is live only and no recordings or presentations will be available.

Developed Deshon ki Dhadkan

I am in Singapore this week for investor meetings, and needed a strong internet connection to host the bootcamp over the weekend.

I was trying to find out which hotels can provide me with a LAN port in the room or a business centre with a LAN port so that I can have hi-speed internet.

I dialled a few hotels, and the line repeatedly went unanswered. Then I asked my travel agent to make a few calls.

Collectively, we dialled more than 50 hotels.

Most of the calls went unanswered despite calling during working hours!

I faced this problem many times while calling my own hotel’s reception and house-keeping.

I have seldom faced this problem in India.
Welcome to the developed first world countries, where there is a huge shortage of talent.

Even when the call was picked up, they seldom had clarity about my question, and couldn’t transfer my phone line to the appropriate person who could answer.

Basically, the ops head at the hotel did not bother to create an SOP or processes.

I couldn’t imagine how much revenue they were losing because of not having offshored their operations to India for the reception and customer support.

This is despite the fact that big hotels and corporations have the ability and resources to engage BPOs.

Can you imagine how desperate startups and SMEs would be to hire talent who can support them to grow

This is why I am really gung-ho about India becoming the export services hub of the world.

Post the pandemic and remote work revolution, the wands of victory lie not in the hands of the BPOs and the KPOs, but in the hands of the remote freelancer who sits in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 city in India, or a woman who had to give up her career for her family, who learns a few internationally relevant high-demand skills, builds a track record and does outreach.

We can help them with remote customer support, remote operations work, remote social media marketing, remote any service that can be exported from India.

It’s no longer about why they will give us work.

It’s about why they desperately need us and cannot afford to say no to us.

That is why we have identified the role of a “startup generalist” or a “virtual assistant” as a key role for global startups, SMEs and professionals to grow - these people are going to be the life-force without which global business ideas cannot be executed and manifested in reality.
