I quit my job after marriage. Can I work from home now?

It is a well known fact that womenโ€™s employment rates increased sharply during World War I (1914-18), from about 23% in 1914 to approx. 40% in 1918.

As a result, alongside managing the home, women began taking up tasks that had traditionally been performed by men.

With the rapid and worldwide growth of remote work and artificial intelligence (AI) driven jobs in the last few years, women in the 21st century may be poised for their very own WWI moment.

And the best part is, you donโ€™t have to be a software engineer, data scientist or lawyer to benefit from international remote work. The stage is huge, you just need to play your part.

Let me share the experience in the words of one of our students, Sushmitha Arukalla, who lives in Hyderabad:

If you are thinking that is it possible for you as a woman to get some remote opportunities or jobs, here is the answer. Let me share the experience in the words of one of our students, Sushmitha Arukalla, who lives in Hyderabad:
I am 2013 B.Tech grad of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and Technology, and was working as a senior cabin crew at SpiceJet for more than six years till October 2020.

I used to earn about INR 1 lakh p.m. as a senior cabin crew at SpiceJet. I am also a soft skills trainer.

I had worked at SpiceJet for 6.5 years, and then I got married and the pandemic struck.

I had to take a break in my career and stop working.

However, soon afterwards, I was eager to restart work and tried to look for opportunities, but it was very difficult.

I wanted a work-from-home job as that would enable me to take care of my family as well.

I have attended 50-100 seminars looking for different career options but finally discovered a viable opportunity at a free bootcamp conducted by SkillArbitrage, where they explained how one can do remote freelance work for international clients and even get full-time or part-time jobs.

In May 2023, I enrolled with one of the courses by SkillArbitrage, and obtained guidance on how to get work from freelance platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr.

The team assisted me to build my freelance profile and write effective proposals. I sent out some proposals and was able to secure 2 work-from-home opportunities within one month itself. One was from a UK client for cold calling and the other was for an appointment-setting role with a US client.

I took up both jobs, but am more interested in the second one, and it pays me about USD 1600 per month.

It is a full-time remote job, and I work from home for 8 hrs per day from the comfort of my home, yet earn more than what I was last earning and also take care of my family. The client wants me to work for them for a long term now.

I am also using several AI tools to produce work of superior quality and discharge my responsibilities more effectively. Learning AI tools has been life changing for me and helps me to stand out in a global talent pool.

I have come a long way from where I started thanks to SkillArbitrage and I am very happy. There is a long way to go ahead.

Anyone can do it if you learn skills, build your track record and do outreach.

Competition is very low and Indians have a massive cost advantage.

Also, it does not matter if you do not have pro-level skills, as you can learn how to use AI properly and deliver great results for your clients.

Mother of a special needs child got USD 10K contract from a Philippines-based startup

Gayatri Vathsan had about 15 years of work experience in multiple MNCs, mostly as an instructional designer and a writer, when she took a career break in 2014 for personal reasons, leaving behind a pay package of 12-13 LPA.

She planned to get back to work around 2015-2016, but couldnโ€™t do that as she has a special needsโ€™ child, and had only about 3-4 hrs per day of free time available for work.

She could not find part-time remote work opportunities back then.

It would take a few more years before remote work and international talent arbitrage became possible.

In August 2023, she started pursuing a remote work course from Skill Arbitrage so that she could pursue remote work on a part-time basis.

She took assistance from our team to build her Upwork profile, writing outreach messages to her clients, posting actively on LinkedIn and also started learning some skills around generative AI.

In 1 month, she received an invite for a job on her Upwork profile from a Philippines-based AI company from Scale AI.

The client offered her an initial trial project, which she performed successfully and then bagged an annual project of USD 10K!

Her role involves training an AI model that her client is developing for a Big Tech company.

It does not require any technical knowledge of coding, science or mathematics.

She has to work only for 2 hours per day and can take care of her family for the remaining time.

Her confidence levels have shot up.

She used to write earlier as a hobby, but did not publish her work.

After joining our courses, she started publishing her content online, and this led to her securing several career opportunities.

Gayathri has secured 4 full-time remote job offers through LinkedIn, all of which pay more than her last job!

She had to decline them for now as she only has 3 hours per day to work.

Gayathri is also writing her novel, and she also obtained an offer from a mainstream book publisher on LinkedIn!

This is what happens when you build skills and a demonstrable track record.

How a mother of an 8-year old girl in Kolkata got INR 50K remote job with a UK startup

Munmun Kundu lives in Kolkata with her family and has 12 yearsโ€™ experience working in a business development role, but lost her job in July 2022 as her employer wrapped up India operations.

She could work at the global back office in Chennai, but it was not possible for her to shift as she had her husband and daughter in Kolkata.

She searched for 1 year, and obtained two opportunities in Kolkata, but they were paying very little in comparison to her previous job, and demanded a 6-day commitment to work from the office.

She was losing her confidence.

After all, many women like her are compelled to sacrifice their careers to raise a family.

Munmun tried to pursue some additional courses but did not get any opportunities as training programs in the market are theoretical and do not offer placement assistance.

Unfortunately, knowledge alone does not help in securing opportunities - one has to learn skills, then develop a track record and build outreach.

Munmun hadnโ€™t yet done that.

After 1 year of trying various things, Munmun started pursuing our course in August 2023.

She started building her track record and doing outreach from the first month itself.

She built her Upwork profile with assistance from our team. She identified her niche to be lead generation, email marketing and virtual assistant.

Our team helped her through the process.

Many new freelancers do not add work samples on their Upwork profile, which is a major reason for not securing opportunities.

Munmun prepared some work samples based on her past work experience and assignments from our courses.

Our team pushed her to prepare a short video introduction for her Upwork profile - this really enables foreign clients to trust freelancers from another country more easily.

Then, Munmun started writing proposals.

In one of her course assignments, Munmun was expected to write 5 proposals, and use AI in the process. The prompts were taught in the class.

She sent about 6-7 proposals, and got her first client in the second month itself - this is an AI startup based in the UK which has seed funding.

Although she had applied for the project on Upwork, she also reached the CEO of the company directly on LinkedIn.

Interesting way to follow-up!

The CEO was impressed and he recommended his team to offer her an interview.

Munmun attended the interview and cracked the job.

She works as a VA and a sales administrator.

Although she was offered a full-time 40 hours/week commitment, she could only commit for more than 20 hrs/week - which her client gladly accepted.

Given the massive cost advantage a client has in working from a resource in India or a developing country, foreign clients do not usually mind such considerations as long as you can deliver value.

As of today, Munmun works for only 3-4 hours per day, and earns USD 9 per hour, which translates into INR 50-60K per month by working from home!

Every 3 months her terms will be considered for revision and a possible 5% hike.

She is also exploring expansion of her role.

The startup founder has shared his plans to raise a follow-on investment round, and work is going to expand soon!

After just one month of receiving her first project, her Upwork profile is showing massive traction.

She receives at least 1 invitation from a client on Upwork without even having to pitch!

She is recognised as a rising talent on Upwork.

She is currently not accepting new clients as she has her hands full with her existing project.

With remote work, she is able to manage her family commitments very well .

Lessons from 3 year old kidโ€™s mother who earned USD 1000 from remote work in under 4 months working 2-3 hrs/day

Aarti Shinde has a 3 year old son and lives in Mumbai with her family. She worked in marketing and client servicing for 7 years, but then had to take a career break of 6 years in 2017 to devote time to her family.

In August 2023, she started learning some skills to perform remote work, and started pitching to clients simultaneously.

Within a month of starting her course, she got her first project from a US business owner. She had to conduct some online research and find suitable vendors - simple work that can be done on the internet.

She earned a mere USD 10 for that project - but the client left her a glowing testimonial on Upwork.

She also secured repeat assignments from that client later.

This helped her to secure her second assignment. Her second client is from Australia, and gave her some research, document compilation and presentation creation work for a product launch.

She earned USD 240 in 2 weeks from this assignment by working on a part-time basis.

Like the US client, the Australian client also gave her repeat work!
Securing projects can take time initially, but work quickly flows in as you build your track record and have testimonials on your profile.

However, during this phase, you cannot stop sending proposals, or get bogged down by rejections or lack of response.

Aarti has sent over 100 proposals till date.

She has worked on 12 projects with about 7-8 clients now, and earned around over 900 dollars in 3 months, and is on the way to reaching her first 1000 dollars.

Once a foreign client realises that he/she can trust you, you can get many more assignments and introductions to new clients.

It is much more expensive for foreign early stage startup founders, SME owners and professionals to hire equivalent resources in their home country, and you have a massive cost advantage if you are working from India or another developing country.

For anyone who is considering remote work, you do not have to be limited by the kind of work that you performed in your job earlier.

Like Aarti, most of our learners who perform remote work do work that is very different from the tasks that they performed in their full-time jobs.

Typically, most of these remote work assignments fall in 3 critical domains - virtual assistant, startup generalist and in content-creation related roles.

Depending on your interest, you can select one of these roles and develop initial skills in a matter of 2-3 months, and then stack up more additional skills over time so that you can continue to add more value to your clients.
