While the video triggered some of the worst memories of my life as a salaried employee of India Inc, it also reminded me exactly why I decided to stop looking for a job and become a freelancer in 2020.

These were some of the major reasons I decided enough was enough when, at the height of the Covid lockdown, some of my colleagues and I lost our jobs overnight, apparently because of ‘cost cutting’, which we later found out was a lie. Our reporting manager merely wanted to use Covid as an excuse to get rid of some of us.
The experience taught me how unstable and insecure even the most apparently secure job could be. And how I was at the mercy of a few people who could decide my fate from a distance, without taking my hard work, loyalty, or expertise into account.
So I decided to be my own boss. Even though I was a single parent, and had no previous experience of freelancing.
I knew I was good at what I did, and I knew I could do it far better without someone constantly breathing down my neck.
So, I launched my career as a freelance writer and consultant.
Yes, the journey had its ups and downs. When I started out, I wasn’t sure what kind of work would come my way. There was no assured salary at the end of the month. There were months when I received virtually no work. I had to learn how to manage my money so that one ‘dry’ month didn’t mean I couldn’t put food on the table.
Just over three years down the line, I can tell you this:
👉🏻 I am making more money than I ever made as a salaried employee
👉🏻 I am working from the peace of my home

Is AI a threat to me?

In other words, I have to know the tool inside out. And supervise it so it doesn’t produce rubbish.
I also found that AI tools can be excellent research assistants, but the final output has to be mine. So they will only enhance my work, not take it away!
In the same way, once you begin actually knowing and using AI-powered tools, you will find what a blessing they can be for a freelance consultant, no matter which area of work you choose.
I know many of you are in the position I was in three years ago, and that first step of discarding a known way of life can be the biggest challenge of all.

I got an award in UK 13 years after failing to secure any UK jobs
It was my dream in college to get a job in a London-based firm. In my college, the top 4 UK law firms used to come to recruit candidates every year.
Although I got shortlisted for interviews at all the firms, my happiness was very short-lived - could not clear any of those interviews!
I was devastated for one year - it was the end of my dream.
Next year, I got jobs at top Indian law firms when I graduated. I should have been very happy, but I wasn’t. I didn’t get foreign jobs.
To top it all off, I was struggling at my law firm job in India as well.
I realised that college had not prepared us to be job-ready. Despite being a topper at one of India’s top law schools, we didn’t learn how to do real-life work.
My batchmates were facing the same problems - I saw very bright and hardworking batchmates getting shouted at, fired, crying, or quitting jobs themselves after losing their confidence.
A few of them are very successful today, but many didn’t survive the grind.
I struggled a lot myself, for the first 6-7 months.
The pain was very real. What could I do so that thousands of other lawyers didn’t have to face the same problems that I faced?
We then started hatching an idea to create courses that will enable young professionals to be job-ready.
A small business idea was born.
We worked hard, silently in the shadows, in slow burn mode, until we finalised a solid collaboration with our alma mater to certify those courses.
And then, we launched our first startup, even though I had very little experience.
I did not want to get into a comfort zone, and decided to quit early and act.
I just received an award for my startup at the House of Lords in London for unicorns and sustainable startups.
Our startup is enabling thousands of Indian professionals from different walks of life to start working with international clients on the side.
