🚨 Trucking Industry Insurance Limits May Change?

Did you know?

The federal minimum insurance requirement for motor carriers has remained at $750,000 since 1985.

According to industry experts, if adjusted for inflation, that amount would be approximately:

💰 $2 Million (based on CPI inflation)
💰 $3.5 Million (including healthcare inflation)

FMCSA has stated for years that the industry may be underinsured compared to today’s risks and accident costs.

⚠️ If insurance requirements increase in the future, carriers could face:
• Higher insurance premiums
• Higher operating costs
• Increased barriers for new carriers entering the industry

At this time, no new minimum insurance requirement has been adopted, but the discussion continues within the industry.

Is There Really a Driver Shortage?

The logistics industry keeps talking about a driver shortage.

I disagree.

What we really have is a driver retention problem.

For years, professional drivers have been expected to:
• Work longer hours
• Spend more time away from their families
• Face poor road conditions
• Take greater risks
• Deliver faster than ever

Yet many are still underpaid, undervalued, and treated as a cost rather than the professionals they truly are.

Then companies ask:

“Why are experienced drivers leaving?”

“Why don’t young people want to become truck drivers?”

The answer is simple.

You cannot build a strong transportation industry while neglecting the people who keep it moving.

The harsh truth:

Drivers aren’t leaving because they don’t want to drive.

They’re leaving because the industry has given them too many reasons to.

Until we improve:
Fair pay
Better working conditions
Respect for drivers
Career growth opportunities

…the so-called driver shortage will remain a problem we’ve created ourselves.

Are Fleets Focusing on the Wrong Recruiting Metric?

Many trucking companies are obsessed with Cost Per Lead (CPL).

But according to Tenstreet, that may be the wrong metric to measure recruiting success.

Instead of simply chasing cheaper leads, fleets should focus on:

Building meaningful relationships with drivers
Improving the candidate experience
Conducting exit surveys to understand why drivers leave
Increasing driver retention, not just hiring more drivers

A low cost per lead doesn’t always mean better hires.
