Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have developed a new material to build artificial muscles that are stronger and up to 10 times more flexible than naturally occurring muscles, a university press release said.
Scientists have been keen to replicate the muscles in the body, which can then be used to make soft robots and new haptic technologies with a sense of touch. There are many soft materials that are known to material scientists that can do the dual job of delivering a mechanical output while also remaining viable under high strain conditions.

Women are more likely to suffer from a miscarriage during the dog days of summer, and the sweltering heat in many parts of the U.S. may be to blame, a new study finds.
A research team led by Boston University found that American women are 44 percent more likely to suffer a miscarriage in late-August than they are in late-February - a drastic difference across a six month period.
While the exact reason for this disparity has yet to have been determined, researchers speculate that it is likely due to the extreme heat as states with more severe summer weather exhibited the trend the most.
They also note that many other potential birth issues, like stillbirths and low birth weight are more common in summer as well.

There is still considerable debate about whether mask mandates in the K-12 schools limit transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in children attending school. Randomized data about the effectiveness of mask mandates in children is still entirely lacking. Our study took advantage of a unique natural experiment of two adjacent K-12 school districts in Fargo, North Dakota, one which had a mask mandate and one which did not in the fall of the 2021-2022 academic year. In the winter, both districts adopted a masks-optional policy allowing for a partial crossover study design. We observed no significant difference between student case rates while the districts had differing masking policies (IRR 0.99; 95% CI: 0.92 to 1.07) nor while they had the same mask policies (IRR 1.04; 95% CI: 0.92 to 1.16). The IRRs across the two periods were also not significantly different (p = 0.40). Our findings contribute to a growing body of literature which suggests school-based mask mandates have limited to no impact on the case rates of COVID-19 among K-12 students.
