๐Ÿ“ฐ My old Android phone became a Linux server, and it handles more than I expected

I've been trying to find a good use for the old Android phone that I have lying around. It has capable hardware with 8 GB RAM and a fairly modern processor. For the longest time, I have only used it as a portable hotspot when I am traveling and sometimes as a webcam for online meetings. Both of these use cases were not making the most out of the hardware that is inside this phone, so I decided to turn it into a Linux server.

Earlier this week I showed off some of the very nice Btrfs performance gains on Linux 7.3. For those wondering what kernel optimizations may have carried over to other file-systems or other file-system specific enhancements, here are Linux 7.2 vs. 7.3 Git performance benchmarks across Btrfs, EXT4, F2FS, and XFS on the same system.

๐Ÿ“ฐ I went hands-on with Ubuntuโ€™s AI voice typing feature

AI-powered voice typing is coming to Ubuntu in Myna, a speech-to-text feature that lets you talk into any valid text field. Itโ€™s still a work in progress, but I grabbed an early build to see how itโ€™s shaping up. With Ubuntu 26.10 now entering its freeze, the user-facing pieces of myna are falling in to place. This week, a new GNOME Shell extension was added to default installs to provide an on-screen indicator when myna is listening and...

๐Ÿ“ฐ AMD Preparing To Enable HDMI 2.1 FRL Support By Default For Linux

It was back in May that the surprising event happened of AMD posting HDMI 2.1 FRL patches for their open-source AMDGPU Linux driver as part of their broader HDMI 2.1 bring-up. For years the open-source HDMI 2.1 support in AMDGPU was blocked by the HDMI Forum but whether it was due to Valve or some other event, the code was finally unblocked. While it's been part of the kernel since Linux 7.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Intel Linux Driver Orphaned For Limiting RF Exposure To Humans

Over the past year and a half a number of open-source drivers in the Linux kernel have been orphaned as a result of departures from the company. The impact has ranged from the Intel CPU "coretemp" temperature driver being orphaned without a maintainer to other lesser known Intel drivers. Another lesser known Intel driver is now being orphaned with no longer having a maintainer at the company: the Intel Specific Absorption Rate Driver...

๐Ÿ“ฐ New Linux โ€œSteal Governorโ€ Targets CPU Contention in Overcommitted Virtual Machines

by George WhittakerLinux kernel developers are considering a new โ€œsteal governorโ€ designed to improve performance when multiple virtual machines compete for limited physical CPU resources. The proposal uses the amount of CPU steal time observed inside a guest to dynamically reduce or expand the number of virtual CPUs on which that VM prefers to schedule work.
