Microsoft just released a Rust-based OS project designed to run Linux apps on Windows.
It’s called LiteBox, and its first tagged release, v0.1.0, is now on GitHub.
LiteBox is a “library OS” that provides operating-system functions inside an application’s sandbox while limiting its access to the host system.
Microsoft lists running unmodified Linux programs on Windows among its use cases, alongside sandboxing Linux apps on Linux.
It also supports security-focused environments such as AMD SEV-SNP.
The project is open source under the MIT license, but it’s still experimental. Microsoft says its APIs and interfaces may change before a stable release.
