However, these laptops are not directly steering the station itself. Instead, they are used for scientific experiments, onboard systems monitoring, and daily astronaut tasks.

The critical navigation and control systems of the ISS—responsible for orbit adjustments, thruster burns, and station safety—are handled by radiation-hardened flight computers. These use specialized processors like the RAD750 and run real-time operating systems (RTOS), such as VxWorks, rather than Linux or Windows.

So, in summary:

Astronaut laptops (ThinkPad/HP) → Linux (Debian-based)

Flight computers (station control) → Radiation-hardened hardware + RTOS (VxWorks)

Tablets (iPads) → Used for procedures and documentation
