It is an international mid-size specific conference that enhances mutual cooperation in a friendly environment on phonetic, phonological, sociolinguistic and diachronic aspects of rhotics.

We invite contributions on any theme concerning rhotic sounds, including but not limited to:

- The diversity of /r/ realizations in the world’s languages

- The production and perception of rhotics in a language or in a language family

- The socio-phonetic aspects of /r/ realizations

- The phonological status of /r/ sounds

- Diachronic aspects of /r/ sounds

- The acquisition of rhotics in L1 and L2

- Phenomena of /r/ sandhi

Mande and Bantu in the Niger-Congo context
https://iling-ran.ru/web/ru/publications/journals/languageinafrica/7-1
That Mande family belongs to the Niger-Congo macro-family was first proposed by Joseph Greenberg in the middle of the 20th century. Over the last two decades this affiliation has regularly been questioned, the main argument for skepticism being the well-known fact there is no trace of any noun class in Mande. Our study proves that these doubts are groundless as far as the lexicon is concerned. If we establish cognacy between specific Mande and Bantu roots, these roots can be regarded as candidates for membership in the Niger-Congo common lexical stock. We thus provide materials for a Proto-Niger-Congo comparative etymological dictionary: 207 common roots and their probable reflexes in contemporary languages and lower level proto-languages are proposed for future discussion by specialists.

Last-minute call for abstracts: Typology in historical phonology (Uppsala, 24–26 August 2026)

Dear colleagues,

We (myself, Stephen Nichols, Pavel Iosad, and László Károly) will be running a friendly and informal workshop on the theme of ‘typology in historical phonology’ at Uppsala next month. A small number of slots remain for contributed papers — if you have something that would fit the remit below, please do get in touch with me by July 19 with a < 500-word abstract, and I’ll get back to you within a few days thereafter! (Apologies for the rather short notice.)

The workshop will run from 24–26 August, with full-length days on the 24th and the 25th. Thanks to generous support from the Swedish Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, we should be able to cover travel and accommodation costs for contributions we accept, within reasonable limits.

Workshop description:

It is near-universally known that certain contrasts, alternations, and sound changes recur across languages, while others are vanishingly rare or altogether unattested; yet answers as to why are not always forthcoming. Explaining these asymmetries falls awkwardly across the boundaries of research communities whose efforts have not traditionally been well coordinated: phoneticians, theoretical phonologists, typologists, philologists, and historical linguists all have something essential to contribute, but the study of cross-linguistic phonological distributions has not consolidated into a coherent enterprise. Progress here bears on an unresolved tension in phonological theory: to what extent is phonological typology the product of synchronic, system-internal pressures, and to what extent is it the accumulated residue of diachronic processes? This workshop aims to bring into dialogue researchers who work on these deeply related questions but publish in largely separate literatures, with the goal of identifying the most productive directions for future work at the intersection of these fields.

Do get in touch with any questions!

All very best wishes,
Deepthi
