In the great roadless core of the Northwest Territories, dozens of sinkholes pit the forest. The most famous is this one, Bear Rock, with plunging sides and deep aquamarine waters. Scientists say it was formed by the collapse of a vast subterranean cave, but for the Indigenous Dene people, Bear Rock is a highly sacred sight. According to legend, a mythological figure known as Yamoria killed giant beavers who were terrorising the people, hanging their skins on the rock.
