While toothed whales have only one nostril (blowhole), baleen whales have two nostrils, and they have a much better sense of smell than toothed whales.

During the evolution of whales, their nostrils migrated up and back to the top of the head, allowing them to function as blowholes. Toothed whales have fewer functional olfactory receptor genes compared to baleen whales, and they have lost a number of brain and nerve structures associated with olfaction.

It has been suggested that the loss of sense of smell in toothed whales may be related to the specialization of the skull and soft tissues for echolocation. However, it has also been hypothesized that filter-feeding whales retained their sense of smell to detect shoals of plankton
