Муся, is that you?
🌟 No, this is a new #a_bit_of_lit@level_APO post and today we'll take a look at the master of short stories — William Sydney Porter (better know as O. Henry ).
Porter lived a life so chaotic it seems like it’s a story he himself wrote! Born in 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina, he was a pharmacy clerk, a bank teller, a cartoonist, and, most pivotally, a convicted embezzler (a person who steals money they have been trusted with).
He started writing short stories from a prison pharmacy in Ohio, plucked his pen name from thin air, and churned out over 300 tales before death in 1910. The man was a literary magician whose trick was making you gasp at the last second.
Take "The Gift of the Magi”, one of his most sentimental tales. You probably know the story: Della sells her hair to buy a watch chain; Jim sells the watch to buy hair combs. Useless gifts are turned into priceless love.
Then there’s "The Last Leaf." A young artist named Johnsy decides she’ll die when the last ivy leaf falls outside her window. Old Behrman, a grumpy failure of a painter, trudges out in the freezing rain and paints a leaf on the wall. It never falls. Johnsy lives. Behrman dies of pneumonia. You really never know what’s coming next with O. Henry.
Finally, "The Green Door." Rudolf Steiner, a professional adventurer in his own mind, gets a mysterious card that says "The Green Door." He hunts down said door and finds a starving girl in need of dinner and rescue. He thinks fate is a grand, poetic director. O. Henry then reveals the card was just a dental ad, and the door was pure, dumb luck.
O. Henry wrote about regular people tripping over life's rug but each time he made sure that we, as readers, laughed, cried and were shocked in a matter of minutes.
If you enjoy short stories as much as we do, join our Summer Reading Club for grades 8–10! There, we'll read American and British short stories together, discuss the plot and the language and share our opinions. A nice way to keep practising English even on vacation🥰
