Continuing this week’s topic, Lana Del Rey will become our guide into the world of Jazz Age parties.

💚 Lana's song "Young and Beautiful" was used in the soundtrack of “The Great Gatsby” and remains one of her most famous songs.

I've seen the world, done it all
Had my cake now
Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel Air now

“Had my cake now” is a reference to the well-known expression "you can't have your cake and eat it too," which means you can't have everything you want; you must choose. But Lana's lyrical heroine (namely, one of the novel's main characters, Daisy Buchanan) manages to do just that. She is young, beautiful, and has “done it all."

Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me when I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?

The aforementioned “aching soul” is Daisy's sick, yearning spirit, wondering if she will be loved at an old age. Daisy clearly has narcissistic traits and realizes that her worth is directly dependent on her beauty. This is why she is drawn to Gatsby, who reminds her of her youthfulness.

All that grace, all that body
All that face makes me want to party
He's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds

The fact that Gatsby makes Daisy want to party is undeniable: it is for her that he throws all those grand parties. These lines highlight Lana’s genius as a songwriter: we see Daisy through Gatsby's perception of her. If not for him, she would simply be an aging, rich woman whose husband is cheating on her. But Gatsby sees her as the eternally young and beautiful love of his life, making her ✨ shine like diamonds ✨

These two abstracts from students' writing have the same mistake, often made at all levels.

✅ Answer: The past perfect tense is missing.

Most students who write remember the rules perfectly well; however, they forget to use it because we don't have it in Russian.

❓ What to do?

— When you check your writing, make sure to have different cycles, including one specifically for tenses.
— There, make sure to check for any mistakes related to sequence of tenses (согласование времен) and reported speech (косвенная речь).
— If your story uses past tenses, everything should be written in the past.

Это одно из самых знаменитых сокровищ Лондона.
Здесь хранится более 8 миллионов экспонатов, от Розеттского камня до мраморов Парфенона. Так что прогулка по залам музея — это путешествие через всю историю человечества.
