Continuing this week’s topic, Lana Del Rey will become our guide into the world of Jazz Age parties.
💚 Lana's song "Young and Beautiful" was used in the soundtrack of “The Great Gatsby” and remains one of her most famous songs.
“Had my cake now” is a reference to the well-known expression "you can't have your cake and eat it too," which means you can't have everything you want; you must choose. But Lana's lyrical heroine (namely, one of the novel's main characters, Daisy Buchanan ) manages to do just that. She is young, beautiful, and has “done it all."
The aforementioned “aching soul” is Daisy's sick, yearning spirit, wondering if she will be loved at an old age. Daisy clearly has narcissistic traits and realizes that her worth is directly dependent on her beauty. This is why she is drawn to Gatsby, who reminds her of her youthfulness.
The fact that Gatsby makes Daisy want to party is undeniable: it is for her that he throws all those grand parties. These lines highlight Lana’s genius as a songwriter: we see Daisy through Gatsby's perception of her. If not for him, she would simply be an aging, rich woman whose husband is cheating on her. But Gatsby sees her as the eternally young and beautiful love of his life, making her✨ shine like diamonds ✨

🧠 Alan Turing — The Codebreaker Who Changed the World
Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician, logician, and cryptanalyst whose work laid the foundations of modern computing and artificial intelligence. A prodigy from early childhood, he studied at Cambridge and Princeton, where he developed groundbreaking theories about how machines could “think.”
🔹 Often considered the father of computer science, he proposed the concept of the “Turing machine,” the theoretical model for all modern computers.
🔹 In 1950, he published the paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” introducing the famous Turing Test — a way to determine if a machine can exhibit human-like intelligence.
🔹 His contributions to science were officially recognized when his portrait appeared on the £50 Bank of England note in 2021 — alongside technical drawings of the Turing Machine and binary code spelling his birthday.
Alan Turing didn’t just change the course of a war — he changed the course of human thought.

During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, leading the team that cracked the German Enigma code — a breakthrough that shortened the war and saved millions of lives. His invention, the “Bombe” machine, could automatically test countless cipher possibilities, revolutionizing codebreaking.

1️⃣ There are two main reasons why this number left such an impression on me. Firstly, although I’ve seen countless conspicuous pet costumes before, this one caught my eye because of how distinctive and sublime it was.
2️⃣ Ryan told me that it was the original comic book that inspired him to make the costume.

Most students who write remember the rules perfectly well; however, they forget to use it because we don't have it in Russian.
— When you check your writing, make sure to have different cycles, including one specifically for tenses.
— There, make sure to check for any mistakes related to sequence of tenses (согласование времен) and reported speech (косвенная речь).
— If your story uses past tenses, everything should be written in the past.

The connection should have something to do with the words' meaning, collocational properties, use in certain context, etc. It cannot simply be 'words starting with A' or '4-letter words'.
Some words may belong to more than one caregory, but your task is to distribute them evenly.

Let’s finish off our week and discussion about “The Great Gatsby” by diving a bit deeper into the great (pun intended ) mind of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
⚪️ Fitzgerald was named after his distant cousin, who penned the lyrics to the US national anthem — “The Star Spangled Banner”. As we can see, genius runs in the family
⚪️ F. Scott was once besties with another prominent American writer — Ernest Hemingway. Both were part of the so-called “Lost Generation” (a group of writers who came of age during the First World War). I guess great minds think alike and stay together…until a friendship breakup happens😩 Best friends turned into frenemies with both authors showing disregard towards the others’ writing style.
⚪️ Although a bit paradoxical, the “Great American Novel” was being written everywhere but America. While on a trip to Europe with his wife, Zelda, and daughter, Scottie, Fitzgerald was busy creating a novel filled with the zeitgeist of America’s Jazz Age.
We’ll be patiently awaiting for your guesses in the comments section)⬇️

Probably the most frequently asked question about the “Great American Dreamer” is what the “F” in his name stands for. Do you know the answer?
We’ll be patiently awaiting for your guesses in the comments section)
