🐻 Have you seen a small brown bear anywhere around here, possibly at Paddington Station?

This bear, created by Michael Bond, has captured the hearts of thousands (yours truly even has a plushie of him that would be taken to every English Olympiad final stage) with his love for friends, family and, of course, marmalade.

📚 He first appeared in the book "A Bear Called Paddington." His story in England began when he arrived as a stowaway, having travelled all the way from Peru in a lifeboat. He was sent by his Aunt Lucy, who had gone to live in the Home for Retired Bears in Lima. He had a small suitcase and a label attached to his coat that simply read,

Please look after this bear.

🤎 He was found by the Brown family (Mr. and Mrs. Brown and their two children, Judy and Jonathan) at the bustling Paddington Railway Station in London. They spotted him sitting on his suitcase near the lost and found. Taking pity on the small, polite bear, they decided to take him home for the night.

From this point, Paddington would go on to have a variety of amazing adventures and, dare I say, side quests with all his neighbours, friends and even enemies (although no one can really hate this bear).

Paddington not only became book-famous but now he’s also movie-famous! The Paddington movie trilogy has already garnered numerous awards, but the main award, of course, will always be the love of the audience.

Did you know… that Paddington became such a Briton that he celebrates two birthdays (just like Queen Elizabeth II): one on the 25th of June and the other the 25th of December.

🇺🇸 Abraham Maslow — the psychologist who explored human potential

Abraham Maslow (1908–1970) was one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century and a pioneer of humanistic psychology. Today, on his birthday (April 1), we remember his life and the ideas that changed how we think about motivation, happiness, and what it means to become our best selves 🌹

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Maslow grew up in a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants. His childhood was often lonely, and he found comfort in books and learning. Although he first studied law to please his parents, he soon turned to psychology, where he discovered his true passion.

He studied at the University of Wisconsin, where he began researching human behaviour. At a time when psychology focused heavily on mental illness and behaviourism, Maslow chose a different path: he wanted to understand what makes people thrive, not just what makes them struggle.

Here are some interesting facts about Maslow, the thinker who:

🤩 developed the famous “hierarchy of needs,” often shown as a pyramid, explaining how human motivation progresses from basic needs like food and safety to higher goals like self-esteem and self-actualization;

😏 helped found humanistic psychology, sometimes called the “third force” in psychology, focusing on personal growth, creativity, and meaning;

🤩 studied highly successful and fulfilled individuals, including historical figures, to understand what makes a person truly happy and complete;

😎 introduced the concept of “self-actualization,” describing the process of realizing one’s full potential and becoming the best version of oneself.

Maslow believed that humans are not just driven by survival, but also by a deep desire to grow, create, and find purpose. His work shifted psychology toward a more positive and hopeful view of human nature — one that continues to influence education, business, and personal development today.
