💱Punctuation for direct speech 💱

📎At the Regional stage, you are often required to include direct speech in your writing, for example, your story (2022, 2019) or interview (2024)
📎For the "Lomonosov" writing task, you also need a quote
📎In «Высшая Проба» you need to base your Listening Summary on specific ideas from the audio, which you may choose to quote, and you can "decorate" your writing task there with quotes, too.

"How do we handle it, then?" you ask.
"Let's review the basic rules together," we answer.

1️⃣Direct speech in one sentence

(a) She said, "My brother is a student."
(b) "My brother is a student," she said.
(c) "My brother," she said, "is a student."
(d) "Well," Jack began, "it's a long story."

Note that the comma connected to the quote is inside the quotation marks, but the one after the verb (said etc.) is not.

2️⃣Direct speech in several sentences

(e) "My brother is a student. He is attending a university," she said.
(f) "My brother is a student," she said. "He is attending a university."

Note that if the whole sentence is a quote, the full stop comes before the closing quotation mark.

3️⃣Questions and exclamations

(g) She asked, "When will you be here?"
(h) "When will you be here?" she asked.
(i) She said, "Watch out!"

Note that the question and exclamation marks are inside the quotes.

4️⃣Single or double?

🇺🇸 In the US, double quotes (" ") are for main direct quotes and titles, while single quotes (' ') are for quotes within quotes or for headlines.
🇬🇧 In the UK, the tradition is the other way around: single for main speech, double for inner quotes.

📍An example for you:
According to the teacher, the test would be “the most difficult exam of the year.” ➡️
“Our teacher called it ‘the most difficult exam of the year,’” Almir complained to his parents.

📍Another example:
“A Retrospective on ‘The Road Not Taken’ and Its Themes”

5️⃣Lower or upper?

Always upper. Both the opening and the closing quotation marks should be in the upper part of the line ("").

• обязательно нужно добавить заголовок;

“With great power… comes a great need to take a nap.”

📙 While we’re all trying to readjust after our winter slumber, Rick Riordan is hard at work on a new Percy Jackson book, promising more adventures that blend mythology, humor, and modern life.

• You might ask, who is Percy?
Well, you’ve all heard of “the Boy Who Lived,” Harry Potter, or the so-called “Zombie Boy” from Stranger Things. But now, let us introduce you to “Seaweed Brain.” Percy Jackson — the demigod that has captured the hearts of Gen Z.

• Rick Riordan, a former middle school English and history teacher turned bestselling author, created a series that merges Greek mythology with modern American life. Drawing on his deep knowledge of classical myths and his experience with young readers, Riordan reimagined ancient gods, monsters, and heroes in a contemporary setting.

Dionysus now serves as the camp director at Camp Half-Blood, a role he fills with visible boredom and sarcasm after being punished by Zeus.

The Three Fates appear in modern disguise as eerie taxi drivers who seem to know far too much about the future.

Ares, the god of war, thunders through the modern world on a motorcycle (a detail that feels perfectly natural for his aggressive role on Olympus).

• This series became a kind of Harry Potter for a new generation and continues to grow its fanbase, especially with the new television adaptation. The second season, released earlier this month, has brought fresh life to the story, introducing Percy Jackson to an even wider audience.

• Everyone can find their cup of tea in Riordan’s works: from the Egyptian adventures of The Kane Chronicles to the Norse escapades of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. Each series blends humor, action, and modern twists on ancient myths.

• The new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series stars Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover, and it has already received high praise from critics. The first season centres around the first book’s plot: Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old demigod and son of Poseidon, suddenly finds himself immersed in a world of Greek gods, mythical creatures, and ancient prophecies. Together with his friends Annabeth and Grover (a satyr, I might add) he sets out on thrilling quests to prevent the end of the world.

Camp Half-Blood and its demigods are waiting for you. Who knows? Maybe you’re a demigod as well.

Who are you from the world of Percy Jackson? Vote using reactions:
🔥Percy Jackson. You somehow save the world while being exhausted, sarcastic, and deeply craving a nap. Chaos follows you, but so does loyalty.
🤓Annabeth Chase.
You run on strategy, architecture facts, and sheer willpower. If there’s a problem, you already have three plans (and a backup).
👀 — The Three Fates. Mysterious, unsettling, and weirdly calm about everything. You’ve already seen how this ends, but you’re not telling.

For practice and better understanding of «Высшая Проба» tasks, join our intensive course on the 7th and 8th of February!
