🇬🇧 Margaret Thatcher — Britain’s “Iron Lady”
Margaret Thatcher (1925–2013) was one of the most controversial leaders in modern British history. Rising from the modest background of a grocer’s daughter in Grantham, she studied chemistry at Oxford, worked as a research chemist, then trained as a lawyer before turning to politics.
When she entered government in the 1970s, she quickly gained a reputation for being tough.
As Prime Minister (1979–1990), Thatcher:
🔹 introduced sweeping free-market reforms, privatizing industries and reducing union power;
🔹 led Britain through the Falklands War (1982) against Argentina and emerged victorious;
🔹 formed a legendary partnership with Ronald Reagan in the Cold War;
🔹 and, despite her hawkish stance, built a working relationship with Gorbachev, famously saying: “We can do business together.”
Her legacy remains divisive: some see her as the woman who rescued Britain from economic decline, others as the politician who deepened social divides.

This year marks 100 years since the publication of one of the most prominent American novels — “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
💚 “The American Dream” and Gatsby
What did the American dream entail for our main protagonist? We’ll discuss two main aspects, which were important for Jay:
It might seem at first glance that Gatsby has it all: a huge mansion, a Rolls Royce and enough assets to host lavish parties every week. Jay is living the American dream. Or is he?
💚 Gatsby wasn’t always this well off. How exactly did he go from rags-to-riches? If you’re keen on country studies, you may have heard about the Prohibition in the US. Gatsby was very much aware of how to exploit the system and did so by becoming a bootlegger.
💚 What about the second point? Daisy wasn’t loved by Gatsby as a person but rather as a concept, a means to achieve the full “American dream.” Money, parties, a lavish lifestyle — all this was a way to get Daisy, to become part of the “old money” (just like in Lana Del Rey’s song)
Gatsby didn’t manage to achieve the “American dream” but can anyone really attain it? That’s for you to decide.

Continuing this week’s topic, Lana Del Rey will become our guide into the world of Jazz Age parties.
💚 Lana's song "Young and Beautiful" was used in the soundtrack of “The Great Gatsby” and remains one of her most famous songs.
“Had my cake now” is a reference to the well-known expression "you can't have your cake and eat it too," which means you can't have everything you want; you must choose. But Lana's lyrical heroine (namely, one of the novel's main characters, Daisy Buchanan ) manages to do just that. She is young, beautiful, and has “done it all."
The aforementioned “aching soul” is Daisy's sick, yearning spirit, wondering if she will be loved at an old age. Daisy clearly has narcissistic traits and realizes that her worth is directly dependent on her beauty. This is why she is drawn to Gatsby, who reminds her of her youthfulness.
The fact that Gatsby makes Daisy want to party is undeniable: it is for her that he throws all those grand parties. These lines highlight Lana’s genius as a songwriter: we see Daisy through Gatsby's perception of her. If not for him, she would simply be an aging, rich woman whose husband is cheating on her. But Gatsby sees her as the eternally young and beautiful love of his life, making her✨ shine like diamonds ✨
