How Pencil "Erasing" Actually Works
- Pencil marks aren't ink that soaks in; they're tiny flakes of graphite (a form of carbon, not lead) deposited loosely on the paper's fibrous surface.
- When you rub an eraser, two main things happen:
1. Mild abrasion: The eraser gently scratches/loosens the graphite particles from the paper fibers.
2. Adhesion: Friction creates a bit of heat, making the eraser material (usually rubber or vinyl) temporarily stickier. The eraser's molecules bond more strongly to the graphite than the graphite does to the paper, so the particles lift off and stick to the eraser instead.
- The leftover "eraser crumbs" are bits of eraser mixed with the removed graphiteβyou brush them away, and the mark is gone.
This is why erasers work great on pencil but not on pen ink (which penetrates deeper or chemically bonds).
