Meteora, a stunning complex of monsteries perching atop towering rock pillars in Greece.

Meteora means 'suspended into the air' and for centuries, monks had to use rope ladders to reach the monasteries.

The Science of Smoke Rings

A smoke ring is essentially a toroidal vortex, which is a spinning doughnut-shaped flow of air. When smoke is expelled through a small, circular opening, the edges of the opening create a difference in air pressure. This difference causes the smoke to roll into a ring shape as it moves forward. The smoke ring maintains its shape due to the spinning motion of the air within the ring.

Interestingly, some volcanoes can also produce smoke rings. These rings are formed when volcanic gases are expelled through a narrow vent, creating a similar vortex effect. The gases, which are warmer and less dense than the surrounding air, rise and form rings that can be hundreds of meters across.

Have you ever wondered why ancient Rome lies underground?

Why were these buildings abandoned for so long?

Around 2,000 years ago, Rome was a bustling metropolis with over 1 million residents. However, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the population plummeted to about 30,000, leaving much of the city abandoned.

For many centuries, the population remained low, fluctuating but never exceeding 200,000. It wasn't until the 1930s that the city's population once again surpassed 1 million.

Hummingbird changes colors with every turn

It's an Anna's hummingbird, and technically, the bird's feathers never change color. It's the angle, not the feathers, that determine what color we see.
