EU Accuses Meta of Breaching Digital Rules

The EU has accused Meta (the parent company of Facebook) of breaching the bloc’s digital rules, potentially leading to fines worth billions of euros. The charges stem from Meta’s new ad-free subscription model for Facebook and Instagram, which has raised privacy concerns. Under this model, users must either pay to avoid data collection or agree to share their data with the platforms to continue using them for free. The European Commission asserts that this “binary choice” fails to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
