It has been reported that a certain incident occurred where Shaykh Ibn Baz had exceeded official working hours. A file was brought to him, and the employee, out of frustration, threw the file directly at the Shaykh's face. The employee narrates that he then struck the door in anger and left. He says, โBy Allah and His Majesty, if Ibn Baz had wanted to make this an example for history, he could have done so.โ Ibn Baz was an imam and a judge, and this incident serves as a reminder of the lofty status of individuals of the past. Their greatness and honor recorded in history were not due to worldly means but because Allah blessed them with strong faith, high morals, and great standing among people. Allah raised them because they adhered to His verses and the noble path He set forth in the Qur'an and the Sunnah of His Messenger ๏ทบ.
Ibn Baz served as a judge in the court, and among his employees was one who would routinely handle files, process cases, and return themโtypical duties of employees close to judges. On one particular day, Ibn Baz lost track of time and was unaware that working hours had ended. As the day went on, he continued requesting the employee to fetch files, write case notes, and complete tasks. Time passed, and working hours had long ended. When Ibn Baz asked the employee again to bring a file, the employee became overwhelmed with anger, feeling upset that Ibn Baz had gone beyond working hours. The employee grabbed the file and threw it directly at the Shaykh's face before storming out.
The employee narrates that he struck the door and immediately left, saying, โBy Allah, if Ibn Baz wanted to make this an example for history, he could have.โ The employee left the courthouse angrily and returned home. But once he was home, worry began to eat away at him. Thoughts consumed his mind: what would happen to him? What punishment awaited him? Would he be fired from his job? He was almost certain of that. When the next day arrived, and the sun rose, the employee nervously entered the courthouse. His hands were trembling, and his body was shaking. He wondered what would happen to him and what kind of discipline awaited him.
When he entered, he saw Ibn Baz sitting calmly. To his surprise, Ibn Baz invited him to sit beside him. The Shaykh, with mercy and kindness, addressed him: โMy son, did we delay you yesterday from returning to your family? My son, forgive us if we caused you any inconvenience. Please donโt hold any grievance in your heart.โ Ibn Baz then began to comfort him, rubbing his hands and repeatedly asking him for forgiveness. Despite being the one wronged, with the file thrown at his face, Ibn Baz displayed remarkable humility and sought reconciliation.
This reflects the character of our pious predecessors. It is reminiscent of the incident involving Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah. When he was harmed, beaten, and mistreated by certain individuals, people gathered in anger, seeking justice for what had happened. The crowd was furious and ready to confront those who had harmed him. But Ibn Taymiyyah, in his humility, addressed them, saying: โWho struck me? I will not seek revenge for myself.โ He explained, โIf the matter concerns my personal rights, I forgive them. If it concerns your rights, then you have no claim unless you hear it directly from me. And if their harm involves the rights of Allah, then Allah will take His rights in His time and His way. As for me, I forgive them.โ
He further encouraged forgiveness by quoting the Qur'an: โDo you not wish that Allah forgives you?โ Abu Bakr radhi allaahu anhu responded to a similar situation by repeatedly saying, โIndeed, I do. I do.โ Ibn Taymiyyahโs words highlight how trivial matters can lead to disunity among families and communities. For instance, relatives may stop speaking for years over insignificant disputes, such as a passing remark or inheritance issues.

These petty worldly concerns, which hold no weight in the sight of Allahโless than the wing of a mosquitoโoften cause families to break apart and relationships to shatter. Those who elevate their minds above such trivialities are truly wise, for Allah grants wisdom to whomever He wills. And whoever is granted wisdom has indeed been given abundant good.

โ๏ธThis doubt is often raised, even by some graduates from well-known institutions. Unfortunately, it stems from the false notion that al-Mazaahib al-Arbaaโ are NOT built upon the Qur'aan and Sunnah. Such arguments absurdly suggest that these great Aaimmah took from sources like the Bible or Tawrah โ a baseless and misinformed claim! Even those who claim to take from Qur'aan and sunnah are taking their opinions from someone unless they are MUJTAHIDS themselves!!!
๐ Numerous scholars have clarified this misconception, including:
๐น Dr. Mutlaq Jaasir
๐น Dr. Aamir Behjat
๐น Dr. Saleh ibn Abdullaah al-Usyami
...and many others, hafizahumullaah.
๐ก To address this, we share a short yet impactful clip from Dr. Aamir Behjat hafizahullaah. May Allah guide us to the truth and protect our understanding of the Deen.
Translation:
This perception is 100% incorrect. Some people, when asked about their school of thought, respond with "Hanbali," "Shafi'i," "Maliki," or "Hanafi." Is this permissible or not?
We say it is permissible, and there is hardly any disagreement about this in terms of affiliation that does not result in *partisanship*. Some people refrain from this and, when asked about their school of thought, say, I follow the Qur'an and Sunnah, imagining that affiliating with one of these schools of thought means abandoning the Qur'an and SunnahโAllaah forbid.
It is a misunderstanding to think that there is a path called "the path of the Qur'an and Sunnah" and another parallel path called "the path of the jurisprudential schools." This perception is completely incorrect.
One of the consequences of this perception is that you find a student asking, "Which is better: studying jurisprudence based on evidence (Fiqhud Daleel) or studying the jurisprudence of the schools (Fiqhul Mazaahib)?" This question itself is based on an error because it rests on the premise that these schools of thought are not based on jurisprudence derived from evidence. This is a very serious mistake. In fact, all these schoolsโwithout exceptionโare jurisprudence based on evidence. Do not imagine that Abu Hanifa's school of thought, for example, is not jurisprudence based on evidence, nor that Malik's school, nor Shafi'i's school, nor Ahmad ibn Hanbal's school are not (rahimahumullaah). All of them are based on jurisprudence derived from evidence without a doubt. Studying their issues and understanding their evidences is undoubtedly a study of religion and Sharia and a study of the Qur'an and Sunnah.

In fact, all these schoolsโwithout exceptionโare jurisprudence based on evidence. Do not imagine that Abu Hanifa's school of thought, for example, is not jurisprudence based on evidence, nor that Malik's school, nor Shafi'i's school, nor Ahmad ibn Hanbal's school are not (rahimahumullaah). All of them are based on jurisprudence derived from evidence without a doubt. Studying their issues and understanding their evidences is undoubtedly a study of religion and Sharia and a study of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
